Foronething,there'smoreofit.LavalUniversityprofessorsGuyPaquetteandJacquesdeGuisestudiedsixmajorCanadiantelevisionnetworksoveraseven-yearperiod,examiningfilms,situationcomedies,dramaticseries,andchildren'sprogramming(thoughnotcartoons).Thestudyfoundthatbetween1993and2001,incidentsofphysicalviolenceincreasedby378percent.TVshowsin2001averaged40actsofviolenceperhour.
PaquetteanddeGuisealsoidentifiedadisturbingincreaseinpsychologicalviolence,especiallyinthelasttwoyears.Thestudyfoundthatincidentsofpsychologicalviolenceremainedrelativelystablefrom1993to1999,butincreased325percentfrom1999to2001.Suchincidentsnowoccurmorefrequentlythanphysicalviolenceonbothfrancophone(讲法语的人)andAnglophone(母语是英语者)networks.
CanadiansarealsoheavilyinfluencedbyAmericanprogramming.PaquetteanddeGuisefoundthatover80percentoftheTVviolenceairedinCanadaoriginatesintheU.S.Theyspeculatethatfrancophonenetworksandstationsmayhaveahigherincidenceofviolencebecausetheybroadcastmoremovies,andthis,inturnmaybeduetolowerproductionbudgets.Canadian-madeviolenceismostlikelytoappearonprivatenetworks,whichbroadcastthreetimesasmanyviolentactsaspublicnetworksdo.Overall,87.9percentofallviolentactsappearbefore9 p.m.,and39percentairbefore8 p.m.--atatimewhenchildrenarelikelytobewatching.

TheGlobalizationofMedia
Concernsaboutmediaviolencehavegrownastelevisionandmovieshaveacquiredaglobalaudience.WhenUNESCOsurveyedchildrenin23countriesaroundtheworldin1998,itdiscoveredthat91percentofchildrenhadatelevisionintheirhome --andnotjustintheU.S.,CanadaandEurope,butalsointheArabstates,LatinAmerica,AsiaandAfrica.Morethanhalf(51percent)ofboyslivinginwarzonesandhigh-crimeareaschoseactionheroesasrolemodels,aheadofanyotherimages;andaremarkable88percentofthechildrensurveyedcouldidentifytheArnoldSchwarzeneggercharacterfromthefilmTerminator.UNESCOreportedthattheTerminator"seemstorepresentthecharacteristicsthatchildrenthinkarenecessarytocopewithdifficultsituations."

Nightlynewscoveragehasbecomeanotherconcern.InspiteoffallingcrimeratesacrossNorthAmerica,disturbingimagesofviolentcrimecontinuetodominatenewsbroadcasting.Asnewsshowscompetewithothermediaforaudiences,manynewsproducershavecometorelyonthemaxim:
"Ifitbleeds,itleads."Violenceanddeath,theysay,keeptheviewernumbersup.Goodnewsdoesn't.
Inmovietheatres,thereissomecontroloverwhowatcheswhat.Butathome,there'slittletostopchildrenfromwatchingarestrictedmovieononeofthemanyemergingspecialtychannels.Kidsmayalsohaveaccesstoadultvideogamesatthelocalvideostore.InDecember2001,theU.S.FederalTradeCommissionreportedthatretailersallowed78percentofunaccompaniedminors,ages13to16,topurchasevideogamesrated"mature."
Tomakesupervisionevenmoreproblematic,Americanchildrenoftenhavetheirownentertainmentequipment. AccordingtotheAnnenbergPublicPolicyCenter,57percentofkidsaged8to16haveTVsintheirbedrooms,and39percenthavegamingequipment.
AYouthSubcultureofViolence
Whilemanyparentsareconcernedaboutthegraphicviolenceandput-downhumorinmanykids'shows,there'sagrowingsubcultureofviolencethatparentalradaroftenmisses.
MusicandMusicVideos
Musicandmusicvideosarepushingintonewandincreasinglyviolentterritory.WhenthecontroversialrapartistEminemcametoTorontoin2000,politiciansandactivistsunsuccessfullycalledforthegovernmenttobarhimfromthecountry,onthegroundsthathisviolentlyricspromotedhatredagainstwomen.Forinstance,hissongKimgraphicallydepictshimmurderinghiswife.
Inspiteof(orperhapsbecauseof)hispromotionofviolence,Eminemcontinuestobeacommercialsuccess.HisMarshallMathersreleasesold679,567copiesinCanadain2000,andwastheyear'sbest-sellingalbum.AndTheEminemShowtoppedCanadianchartsformonthsin2002,selling,atonepoint,approximately18,000copiesaweek.
Eminem'ssuccessisnotexceptional.Extremelyviolentlyricshavemovedintothemainstreamofthemusicindustry.TheUniversalMusicGroup,theworld'slargestmusiccompany,listsEminem,DrDreandLimpBizkitallofwhomhavebeencriticizedfortheirviolentlyricsamongitstop-grossingartists.AndMadonna's2002musicvideoWhatItFeelsLikeForaGirlcontainedsuchgraphicviolencethatevenMTVrefusedtoairitmorethanonce.
VideoGames
Violenceingeneral,andsexualviolenceinparticular,isalsoastapleofthevideogameindustry.Thecurrenttrendisforplayerstobethebadguys,actingoutcriminalfantasiesandearningpointsforattackingandkillinginnocentbystanders.Althoughthesegamesarerated M,formatureaudiences,it'scommonknowledgethattheyarepopularamongpre-teensandteenagedboys.
WebSites
VirtualviolenceisalsoreadilyavailableontheWorldWideWeb.Childrenandyoungpeoplecandownloadviolentlyrics(includinglyricsthathavebeencensored(删减)fromretailversionsofsongs),andvisitWebsitesthatfeatureviolentimagesandvideoclips.Muchoftheviolenceisalsosexualinnature.
