ClosebytheFrostDriftingHallliestheNineDragonPool.Aordingtolegend,theCentralShaanxiPlainwasoncestrickenbyaseveredroughtintheveryremotepast.Thus,bytheorderoftheJadeEmperor(theSupremeDeityofHeaven),anolddragoncameattheheadofeightyoungones,andmaderainhere.Yetwhenthedisasterwasjustabating,theyloweredtheirguardsomuchthatitbecameseriousagain.Inafitofanger,theJadeEmperorkepttheyoungdragonsundertheJadeCauseWay(玉堤),withtheMorningGlowPavilionandtheSunsetPavilionbuiltatbothendsofitrespectively,tomaketheyoungdragonsspoutcleatwateralldaylongtomeettheneedsoflocalirrigation.Besides,hehadtheolddragonconfinedtothebottomoftheRoaringDragonWatersidePavilionsituatedattheupperendoftheJadeCauseway,andobligedhimtoexercisecontrolovertheyoung.

TheNine-BendCorridorwestoftheNineDragonPoolleadsdirectlytotheMarbleBoat,whichresemblesadragonboatonthewatersurface.IntheMarbleBoatliestheNineDragonTang(theNineDragonHotSpringwhereEmperorXuanZongusedtotakebaths).Attheheadofhiscourtladiesandhundredsofhisofficials,hewouldetotheHuanqingPalacetospendhiswinterdaysinOctoberoftheLunarcalendarandreturntoChang‘anCityastheyeardrewtoitsclose.TheNineDragonHotSpringwasoriginallybuiltwithcrystaljade,whosesurfacewasdecoratedwiththecarvingsoffish,dragons,birdsandflowers.Inittwinlotusflowersalsocarvedwithwhitejadecouldbeseenaswell.Thespringwaterwelledfromthebreakofanearthenjar,andspouteduptothelotusflowers.HencethenameLotusFlowerTang(theLotusFlowerHotSpring).

HuaShanisthehighestofChinasfivesacredmountains.Itis120kilometerseastofXian.Ithasfivepeaksthatresemblethepetalsofaflower.Thehighestpeakis2180meters(7085feet)。

00onSaturdaymorningandtookataxitothetrainstation.Thereweaskedaroundandlocatedamini-bus.Thebusmadeacoupleofstops.Onewastoseeapresentationaboutthetraditionalmedicinesgrownonthemountainandachancetobuysomeofthem.ItprobablywouldhavebeeninterestingifweunderstoodChinese.Ourguidesgaveusthegeneraloutlineaboutwhatwassaid.Theotherstopwasaquicklunchstop.

TherearetwoapproachestoHuaShan.[Chineseproverb:

“ThereisoneroadandonlyoneroadtoHuaShan,”meaningthatsometimesthehardwayistheonlyway.]Thewestentranceinvolves10kilometersofwalkingonaroadbeforeyoustartclimbing.Wewentwiththeeastentrance,wherethebusbringsyoutothebaseofacablecarthatgoesuptothe1500meterNorthPeak.OurplanwastowalkuptotheNorthPeak,thenclimbtothefourotherpeaksthenextdayandtakethecablecardown.

Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection)。

Physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

WereachedtheNorthPeakbefore4:

Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly2000meters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak–mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.

WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franaeptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofHuaShan(theprayerwasanswered)。

Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.

AfterMiddlePeak,thecrowdsgotmuchthinner.ThenextwasEastPeak,whichhadasteepladderclimbingrock.Franwasdubiousaboutthisascent,butrealizedthattheladderwasntsobadandwentforit.Thatwasagooddecisionbecausewewerethenabletodoaloopandthetrailsgotalmostemptyatthispoint.Afterskirtingthetopofacliffwithasteepdropoffonbothsides,wehadapleasantwalktoSouthPeakandWestPeak.Therewasevenasmallamountofdirttrail!

ThesummitofSouthPeakwasthehighestpointonHuaShan,soofcourseweaskedanotherhikertotakeaphotoofourguidesandus.Theviewsfromthetopsofeachpeakwerebeautiful.HuaShanandthesurroundingmountainsareveryruggedandremindussomewhatofhikinginthesouthwesternUnitedStatesortheSierras.

WetookaroutethateventuallybroughtustothemainlinereturningdownfromMiddletoNorthPeak.Wewerehappytohaveascendedeachofthefivepeaks(petals)ofFlowerMountain.

Bycablecar(thelongestinAsia),itwasjust7minutesdowntotheparkentrance.Wecaughtashuttlebusintotown,thentransferredtoabusforXian.

Ourguidestoldusthatwehadwalkedupanddownatotalof4000stairs!

Weweregladthatwedidnothavethisinformationwhenwestarted.Forthreedaysafterreturninghome,oursorelegmusclesinstructedustotaketheelevatortoourfifthfloorapartmentratherthanclimbingthestairs.
