 Inaddition,thestudyexaminedpeoplewhoreadnewspapersandmagazinesandfoundthattheywere11percentlesslikelytodiethannon-readers,butonlyiftheyspentmorethansevenhoursreadingeachweek.Thatmaybeduetothedifferentformsoftheseitems.Whenpeoplereadnewspapersormagazines,theytendtoskimthematerialratherthanreaditfully.AvniBavishi,thestudy’sleader,said,“Webelievepeopleneedtoknow,learnandunderstandmorethingswhentheyarereadingbooks,becausethey’relongerandtherearemorecharacters,moreplotstofollow,andmoreconnectionstomake.”

 Fromallofthis,theauthorsconcludedthat,aswithahealthydietandexercise,booksappeartopromotea“significantsurvivaladvantage.”
