  Deathappearedashehadpromised,andservedasgodfatherinanorderlymanner.

  Aftertheboycameofagehisgodfatherappearedtohimonedayandaskedhimtogowithhim.HetookhimoutintothewoodsandshowedhimanherbthatGREwthere,saying,"Nowyoushallreceiveyourgodfather'spresent.Iwillturnyouintoafamousphysician.WheneveryouarecalledtoasickpersonIwillappeartoyou.IfIstandatthesickperson'shead,youmaysaywithconfidencethatyoucanmakehimwellagain;thengivehimsomeofthisherb,andhewillrecover.ButifIstandatthesickperson'sfeet,heismine,andyoumustsaythatheisbeyondhelp,andthatnophysicianintheworldcouldsavehim.Butbewareofusingthisherbagainstmywill,orsomethingverybadwillhappentoyou."

  However,Deathcametothephysician,madeadarkandangryface,threatenedhimwithhisfinger,andsaid,"Youhavebetrayedme.Iwilloverlookitthistimebecauseyouaremygodson,butifyoudaretodoitagain,itwillcostyouyourneck,forIwilltakeyouyourselfawaywithme."

  Soonafterwardtheking'sdaughterbecameseriouslyill.Shewashisonlychild,andhecrieddayandnightuntilhiseyesweregoingblind.Thenheproclaimedthatwhosoeverrescuedherfromdeathshouldbecomeherhusbandandinheritthecrown.

  Whenthephysiciancametothesickgirl'sbedhesawDeathatherfeet.Heshouldhaverememberedhisgodfather'swarning,buthewassoinfatuatedbytheprincess'sGREatbeautyandtheprospectofbecomingherhusbandthathethrewallthoughttothewinds.HedidnotseethatDeathwaslookingathimangrily,liftinghishandintotheair,andthreateninghimwithhiswitheredfist.Heliftedupthesickgirlandplacedherheadwhereherfeethadbeen.Thenhegavehersomeoftheherb,andhercheeksimmediatelyturnedred,andlifestirredinheronceagain.

  Death,seeingthathehadbeencheatedoutofhispropertyforasecondtime,approachedthephysicianwithlongstridesandsaid,"Youarefinished.Nowitisyourturn."

  thenDeathseizedhimsofirmlywithhisice-coldhandthathecouldnotresist,andledhimintoanundergroundcavern.Therethephysiciansawhowthousandsandthousandsofcandleswereburninginendlessrows,somelarge,othersmedium-sized,otherssmall.Everyinstantsomediedout,andotherswererelit,sothatthelittleflamesseemedtobejumpingaboutinconstantchange.

  "See,"saidDeath,"thesearethelife-lightsofmankind.Thelargeonesbelongtochildren,themedium-sizedonestomarriedpeopleintheirbestyears,andthelittleonestooldpeople.However,evenchildrenandyoungpeopleoftenhaveonlyatinycandle."

  "Showmemylife-light,"saidthephysician,thinkingthatitstillwouldbeverylarge.

  Deathpointedtoalittlestumpthatwasjustthreateningtogoout,andsaid,"See,thereitis."

  "Oh,deargodfather,"saidthehorrifiedphysician,"lightanewoneforme.Doitasafavortome,sothatIcanenjoymylife,andbecomekingandthehusbandofthebeautifulprincess."

  "Icannot,"answeredDeath."Onemustgooutbeforeanewoneislighted."

  "thensettheoldoneontoanewonethatwillgoonburningaftertheoldoneisfinished,"beggedthephysician.

  Deathpretendedthathewasgoingtofulfillthiswishandtookholdofalargenewcandle,but,desiringrevenge,hepurposelymadeamistakeinrelightingit,andthelittlepiecefelldownandwentout.Thephysicianimmediatelyfelltotheground,andhetoowasnowinthehandsofDeath.

  Onceuponatimetherewasastrangemusicianwhowaswalkingthroughthewoodsallbyhimself,thinkingaboutthisandthat.Whentherewasnothingleftforhimtothinkabout,hesaidtohimself,"Itisboringhereinthewoods.Iamgoingtogetmyselfagoodcompanion."

  thenhetookhisfiddlefromhisback,andplayedatunethatsoundedthroughthetrees.

  Beforelongawolfcametrottingthroughthethickettowardhim.

  "Ah,awolfiscoming.Ihavenodesireforhim,"saidthemusician,butthewolfcamenearerandsaidtohim,"Ah,dearmusician,youplayverywell.Itoowouldliketolearntoplay."

  "Youcanlearnquickly,"answeredthemusician."YouwillonlyhavetodowhatItellyou."

  "Oh,musician,"saidthewolf,"Iwillobeyyoulikeapupilobeyshisteacher."

  themusiciantoldhimtocomealongwithhim,andwhentheyhadwalkedsomedistancetogether,theycametoanoldoaktree.Itwashollowinsideandsplitupthemiddle.

  "Look,"saidthemusician,"ifyouwantlearntoplaythefiddle,putyourforepawsintothiscrack."

  thewolfobeyed,andthemusicianquicklypickedupastone,andwithoneblowwedgedhistwopawssofirmlythathehadtostaylyingtherelikeaprisoner.

  "WaithereuntilIreturn,"saidthemusician,andwentonhisway.

  Afterawhileheagainsaidtohimself,"Itisboringhereinthewoods.Iwillgetmyselfanothercompanion."

  Hetookhisfiddleandagainplayedintothewoods.Beforelongafoxcamecreepingthroughthetreestowardhim.

  "Ah,afoxiscoming,"saidthemusician."Ihavenodesireforhim."

  thefoxcameuptohimandsaid,"Oh,dearmusician,youplayverywell.Itoowouldliketolearntoplay."

  "Youcanlearnquickly,"saidthemusician."YouwillonlyhavetodowhatItellyou."

  "Oh,musician,"answeredthefox,"Iwillobeyyoulikeapupilobeyshisteacher."

  "Followme,"saidthemusician,andwhentheyhadgonesomedistancetogether,theycametoafootpathwithtallsaplingsonbothsides.Therethemusicianstoodstill,andfromonesidehebentayounghazelnuttreedowntothegroundandputhisfootontheendofit.Thenhebentdownanotheryoungtreefromtheotherside,andsaid,"Nowlittlefox,ifyouwanttolearnsomething,givemeyourleftfrontpaw."

  thefoxobeyed,andthemusiciantiedhispawtotheleftstem."Littlefox,"hesaid,"nowgivemeyourrightpaw."

  Hetiedthisonetotherightstem.Aftermakingsurethattheknotsinthecordweretightenough,heletgo.Thetreesspranguprightandjerkedthelittlefoxupward,leavinghimhangingtherestrugglingintheair.

  "WaithereuntilIreturn,"saidthemusician,andwentonhisway.

  Onceagainhesaidtohimself,"Itisboringhereinthewoods.Iwillgetmyselfanothercompanion.Sohetookhisfiddle,andmusicsoundedthroughthewoods.Thenalittleharecamejumpingtowardhim.

  "Iamapoor,honesttailorwhoisrequestingadmission,"repliedapleasantvoice.
