TheprojectTheoriginalIntroduction,whichisretainedhere,usefullysituatedthevolumeinthewiderworkoftheCentre.Italsosoundedsomeresonantnotes.Itidentifiedthebooksroleinassemblingbetweenonesetofcoversawiderangeofresearchfromdiversehands(includingthatofmanyCentregraduatestudentslikePaulWillis,IainChambers,RachelPowell,JennyGarberandChasCritcherwhowerenotregularmembersoftheSub-CulturesGroup,andofseveralauthorsincludingPaulCorrigan,GeoffPearson,JohnTwohig,GrahamMurdock,RobinMcCron,SimonFrithandSteveButterswhowereneveractuallyCentremem-bers).Itsignaledthenecessarilytentative,unfinished,work-in-progresscharacterofthevolumeanditsbroadintellectualindebtedness.ItmarkedthevolumesrelationtoworkthatwasongoingelsewhereintheCentreandsubsequentlypublished,especiallyPaulWillisLearningtoLabour(1977)andProfaneCulture(1978),andpointedtowardstheconnectedbutdifferentemphasesthatresultedinPolicingtheCrisis(Halletal.,1978).ItunderlinedthecollectivenatureoftheCentresintellectualpracticeanditsattendantdifficulties,whichthevolumeamplyillustrated,anditsstatusasaloose,thematicallyorganisedratherthanasingle-authoredmonograph.Restatingthesequalificationsareawayofre-contextualisingthebookforcon-temporaryreaders.Inevitably,asithasdetacheditselffromaspecifictimeandcontextandtakenonalifeofitsown,RTRhasbeenasisthefateofalltextsofthiskindselectivelyappropriatedinwaysthatitsauthorssometimeshavedifficultyinrecognising,andextensivelycritiqued,oftenwithindisciplinesanddiscoursesfarremovedfromitsoriginallocation.Wemakenocomplaintaboutthis,whichisanintrinsicpartofdiscursive,interpretivework.However,authors,thoughnolongerprivilegedinterpreters,arenotasdeadasRolandBarthesoncesupposedand,therefore,arenotprecludedfromenteringthediscourseagainatanotherplace,anotherlinkinanever-unwindingchain.Institutionally,theCentressub-groupsaroseasanextensionofthereport-backsessionsonon-goingresearchoriginallyknownaswork-in-progressseminars.TheSubculturesGroupwasparalleledattheempiricalresearchlevelbyotherresearchgroupswhoseworkwaspublishedinsubsequentvolumesoftheJournalandintheHutchinsonseries.Theworkofallthesegroupswasframedbythebroadertheoreticaldebateon-goingintheweeklyTheorySeminar,whereawiderprogrammeofinterdisciplinaryreadingandconceptualdiscussionwasbeingvigorouslyengaged.TheaimoftheSubculturesGroupwastoprovideacommonpointofreferenceforthegroupingoftheCentresindividualgraduateresearchprojectsexaminingvariousaspectsoftheyouthculturephenomenon.InRTR,subculturesarerecognizedasaparticularlyclearlystructuredaspectofthisbroaderphenomenon.TheSubculturesGroupthusprovidedaspacefordiscus-sion,debateandorientationfortheseprojects;itcollectivisedbackgroundread-ing,helpedtointegratetheCentresprogrammeofworkaroundcommonthemesandfacilitatedaprocessofgroundedtheorising.ThislocationoftheSubculturesGroupwithinthebroaderCulturalStudiesprojecthastendedtogetlostinsubsequentdebate.Thesubculturesworkwaspartandparcelof,thoughalsoadifferentiatedrelativelyautonomouselementin,theevolutionofadistinctiveapproachtoCulturalStudiesthatwasemerginginthisperiodattheCentre.Theriseofyouthculturesseemedtousoneofthemostdistinctiveindeed,spectacularaspects
