NoahWebster,theAmericanwordepert,liedthisword.HeputitinhisEnglishlanguagedictionaryin1806,“Belittle-tomaesomebodyorsomethingsmall,unimportant.”

AmericanshadalreadyacceptedJefferson’swordandstartedtouseit.In1797,theIndependentChroniclenewspaperusedthewordtodescribeapoliticianthepapersupported.“Heisanhonorableman,”thepaperwrote,“solettheoppositiontrytobelittlehimasmuchastheyplease.

In1872,afamousAmericanwordepertdecidedthatthetimehadcometoillthisword.Hesaid,“‘Belittle’hasnochanceofbecomingEnglish.AndasmorecriticalwritersofAmerica,liethoseofBritain,feelnoneedofit,thesooneritisforgotten,thebetter.”Thisepertfailedtoilltheword.Today,“belittle”isusedwheretheEnglishlanguageisspoen.
