Overtheholidays,IwasaskedbyafriendtolookataproblemtheywererunningintoontheirWindowsVistasystem.TheywereunabletoconnecttoWindowsUpdateandcheckforupdatesandreceivedacrypticerrormessage.Afterafewminutesofpokingaroundonthesystem,I

recognizedacommonsetofsymptomsthatIhadalsoseenonacoupleofco-workerssystemsafewweekspriortothat.IalsorecognizedsomesymptomsthatIveheardaboutfromcustomersviamyblogwhohadtroublegettingthe.NETFramework3.5toinstallonWindowsVistaduetoissueswiththe.NETFramework2.0SP1and/or.NETFramework3.0SP1OSupdatepackagesthatittriestoinstallbehindthescenes.

SinceIhadasystemavailabletodebugon,Iranthroughsome

troubleshootingstepsthatIvelearnedoverthepastcoupleofyearsrelatedtoWindowsVistaOSupdateinstallationissuesandidentifiedseveralspecificsymptoms,andtheneventuallycameupwithasetofstepstofi_thissystem.ThenIcamebacktoworkaftertheholidaysandtriedoutthestepsonmyco-workerssystemsandfoundthatthesamebasicsetofsymptomsandresolutionstepsworkedthereaswell.Asaresult,ImgoingtotrytosummarizethesesymptomsandthestepsIusedtoresolvetheminthehopethattheymightbehelpfultootherssufferingfromthesameissuesontheirsystems.

InthesystemsIvebeenabletofindsofarwiththistypeofproblem,Iveobservedacommonsetofsymptoms.

BlankWindowsFeaturesdialog

GoingtotheProgramsandFeaturescontrolpanelandthenclickingthelinkontheleftlabeledTurnWindowsfeaturesonoroffbringsuptheWindowsFeaturesdialog.ThiscanalsobelauncheddirectlybyrunningOptionalFeatures.e_e.IntheerrorcasesIveseen,theWindowsFeaturesdialogappearscompletelyemptyinsteadoflistingalloftheWindowscomponentsthatcanbeenabledordisabledonthesystem.

Symptom2:

Blanklistofinstalledupdates

GoingtotheProgramsandFeaturescontrolpanelandthenclickingthelinkontheleftlabeledViewinstalledupdatesbringsupalistofinstalledservicepacks,updatesandhotfi_esfortheOSandany

applicationsinstalledontheOS.IntheerrorcasesIveseen,thelistofinstalledupdateswascompletelyempty,evenwhenIknewforsurethatsomeOSupdateshadbeeninstalledonthesystem.

OnthesystemsthatIhavebeenabletofindinthisstatesofar,IhaveusedthefollowingsetofstepstogetthesystembackintoaworkingstatesothatitcoulddisplayinformationintheWindowsFeaturesdialog,checkforupdatesusingWindowsUpdateandsuccessfullyinstallOSupdates.Ihaveonlybeenabletoworkwithafewsystemsinthisbrokenstatethough,soImnotsurethesamesetofstepswillalwayswork.Iwantedtopostthemhereincasetherearehelpfulinsomecasesthough,butpleasekeepinmindthatyourmileagemayvary.

1.DownloadtheSystemUpdateReadinessToolandsavethe.msufiletoyourdesktop.YouneedtomakesuretodownloadthecorrectversionofthistoolbecausethereisadifferentversionforeachOStypeandprocessorarchitecture.Youcanfindthedownloadlinksforthistoolinthisknowledgebasearticle.

2.RuntheSystemUpdateReadinessTool.Onceyoudownloadtheappropriate.msufileforyourOStypeandprocessorarchitecture,youcandouble-clickonittoinstallit.ThistoolisnotanOSupdate,butitusesthe.msupackaginglogicthatOSupdatesuse.Therefore,itwilltellyouthatitisinstallingthepackage,butitisactuallyrunningthetoolinthe

background.Whenthetoolisrunning,youwillseeprocessesnamedchecksur.e_e,checksurlauncher.e_eandchecksurpackage.e_elistedinTaskManager.

Thetoolattemptstofi_anyproblemsthatitfindsonthesystem.However,itwasnotabletofi_theproblemsitfoundonthesystemsthatIhaveseenthate_periencedthistypeofproblem.Itisstillusefultorunthetoolinordertocreatealogfilethatliststheissuesitfinds.

5.LookattheoutputintheCheckSUR.logfileandmakefi_esbasedonwhatthetoolreports.Thechecksur.e_etoolcreatedalogfileatthefollowing

problemswithsomeoftheregistryvalueslocatedunder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ComponentBasedServicing\Packagesonthesystem.IusedtheinformationinCheckSUR.logtolocateandmanuallydeletekeyswitherrorsreportedforthem.Ononeofthesystems,someofthesub-keysonlyhadpermissionsassignedtothemforthelocalsystemaccount,soIhadtoaddtheAdministratorsgroupandthendeletethem.Ononeoftheothersystems,someofthesub-keyswerereportedasorphanedfromsomepreviousOSupdatethathadbeeninstalledonthesystem,soImanuallydeletedthem.
