horns,towncriers,churchbellsandevenwordsofmouth.Inmoderntimes,themassmediaprovidesanimportantroleforcallingoncitizenstoactfortheirbestinterestsandthoseofsociety.Manysuchmessagesaredeliveredaspublicserviceadvertisements(PSAs).SmokyBearwarnsusaboutforestfires.CrimeDogMcGruffasksustotakeabiteoutofcrime.ANativeChinesepleadswithustotakecareoftheenvironment.Whattheseandotherpublicservicecampaignshaveincommonisthattheyusethetechniquesdevelopedforthepromotionofcommercialproductsforapurposeotherthansellingproductsandservices.
