LedbyJessicaRosenbergatAachenUniversity,researchersscannedthebrainsof16earlyrisers,23nightowlsand20peoplewithintermediatesleepinghours.Theyfoundthatthebrainsofnightowlshadless“whitematter”—whichspeedsupthetransmission(传输)ofnervesignals–inbrainareasassociatedwithdepression.
Asyouknow,afterpeopleflyinanairplanefromonetimezonetoanother,theyoftensufferfromaconfusedandtiredfeelingcalled“jetlag”becausetheirbodyclocksareoutofsync(不同步的)withthenewtimezone.Itusuallytakesaboutaweekfortheirbodiestoadjusttothenewtime.Butnightowlsalwayshavedifficultysyncingtheirbodiestotherighttimeduetotheirbrainstructure.“It’sliketheysufferfrompermanentjetlag,”saidRosenberg.
