TheBananaisthecommonnameusedforherbaceousplantsinthegenusMusa,whichbecauseoftheirsizeandstructure,areoftenmistakenfortrees.Bananasarecultivatedfortheirfruit,whichbearsthesamename,andtoalesserextentasornamentalplants.BananasareofthefamilyMusaceae.Globally,bananasrankfourthafterrice,wheatandmaizeinhumanfoodproduction;theyaregrownin130countriesworldwide,morethananyotherfruitcrop.BananasarenativetotropicalsoutheasternAsiabutarewidelycultivatedintropicalregions.Inpopularcultureandcommerce,"banana"usuallyreferstothesoft,sweet"dessert"bananasthatareusuallyeatenraw.Thebananasfromagroupofcultivarswithfirmer,starchierfruit,generallyusedincookingratherthaneatenraw,aretypicallyknownasplantains.mainoruprightgrowthiscalledapseudostem,which,whenmature,willobtainaheightof2–8m（variesbetweendifferentcultivars）,withleavesofupto3.5minlength.Eachpseudostemproducesasinglebunchofbananas,beforedyingandbeingreplacedbyanewpseudostem.Thebaseoftheplantisarhizome（knownasacorm）.Cormsareperennial,withaproductivelifespanof15yearsormore.

Thetermbananaisappliedtoboththeplantanditselongatedfruit（technicallyafalseberry）whichgrowinhangingclusters,withupto20fruittoatier（calledahand）,and5-20tierstoabunch.Thetotalofthehangingclustersisknownasabunch,orcommerciallyasa"bananastem",andcanweighfrom30–50kg.Thefruitaverages125g,ofwhichapproximately75%iswaterand25%drymattercontent.BananasareavaluablesourceofVitaminA,VitaminC,andpotassium.

Althoughthewildspecieshavefruitswithnumerouslarge,hardseeds,virtuallyallculinarybananashaveseedlessfruits.Bananasareclassifiedeitherasdessertbananas（meaningtheyareyellowandfullyripewheneaten）orasgreencookingbananas.Almostallexportbananasareofthedesserttypes;however,onlyabout10-15%ofallproductionisforexport,withtheU.S.andEUbeingthedominantbuyers.

ThedomesticationofbananastookplaceinsoutheasternAsia.ManyspeciesofwildbananasstilloccurinNewGuinea,Malaysia,IndonesiaandthePhilippines.RecentarchaeologicalandpalaeoenvironmentalevidenceatKukSwampintheWesternHighlandsProvinceofPapuaNewGuineasuggeststhatbananacultivationtheregoesbacktoatleast5000BC,andpossiblyto8000BC.ThiswouldmaketheNewGuineanhighlandstheplacewherebananaswerefirstdomesticated.ItislikelythatotherspeciesofwildbananaswerelateralsodomesticatedelsewhereinsoutheasternAsia.
