TheThornBirdswrittenbyAustralianfamouswomanwriterColleenMcCulloughhascausedtremendoussensationthroughouttheworldsinceitwaspublishedin1977andiscalledAustralianGonewiththeWind.BasedontheuniquebackgroundofAustralianculture,thenovelunfoldslifeexperiencesandemotionaljourneyofthefemalesofthreegenerationsintheClearyfamily.First,thisthesisincludsabriefintroductiontothewriter,thenovelandthesymbolismofthethornandthethornbirds.Afterwardsitmakesadeepanalysisofthelifecourseofthefourfemalecharactersofthreegenerations-MaryCarson,Fiona,Meggie,Justin,andexploresthespiritoftheiruntiringpursuitforloveandbraveresistanceoftraditionalfemalefate,aswellastheawakeningoffemale’sself-consciousnessinacertainperiod.Aconclusionisdrawnthatwomencangainhappinessandrealizeself-value,aslongastheyestablishcorrectloveviewsandarebraveenoughtopursueloveandchallengethedestinies.

Cleary,afour-year-oldgirllivinginNewZealandintheearly1920s.MeggielivestogetherwithherfatherPaddy,anIrishfarmlaborer,andFee,herharassedbutaristocraticmother,andthreeelderbrothersinNewZealand.Thelarge,poorfamilylivedahardlifeuntilonedaywhenPaddy’ssister,MaryCarson,oneoftherichestwomeninAustralia,wholivesonanenormoussheepstationcalledDroghedamailaletterinwhichshepromisestoofferPaddyajobonherestate.Paddyacceptstheinvitationwithdelight.ThenthewholefamilymovestotheDrogheda.
