Finger,alawfirm.HediedonDec.19,2008atage87andissurvivedbysixchildrenand15grandchildren:

  Itmayseemverystrangetothereaderthatoneofmytenderageshouldalreadybethinkingaboutthatinevitableendtowhicheventhepathsofglorylead.However,thisessayisnotreallyconcernedwithdeath,butratherwithlife,myfuturelife.IhavesetdownherethethingswhichI,atthisage,believeessentialtohappinessandcompleteenjoymentoflife.Someofthemwilldoubtlessseemveryoddtothereader;

otherswillperhapsbecompletelyinaccordwithhisownwishes.Atanyrate,theycomposeasynopsisofthethingswhichIsincerelydesiretohavedonebeforeIleavethisworldandpassontothelifehereafterortooblivion.

  BeforeIdieIwanttoknowthatIhavedonesomethingtrulygreat,thatIhaveaccomplishedsomegloriousachievementthecreditforwhichbelongssolelytome.IdonotaspiretobecomeasfamousasaNapoleonandconquermanynations;

butIdowant,almostaboveallelse,tofeelthatIhavebeenanadditiontothisworldofours.Ishouldliketheworld,oratleastmynativeland,tobeproudofmeandtositupandtakenoticewhenmynameispronouncedandsay,"

Thereisamanwhohasdoneagreatthing."

Idonotwanttohavepassedthroughlifeasjustanotherspeckofhumanity,justanothercoginatremendousmachine.Iwanttobesomethinggreater,fargreaterthanthat.MydesireisnotsomuchforimmortalityasfordistinctionwhileIamalive.WhenIleavethisworld,Iwanttoknowthatmylifehasnotbeeninvain,butthatIhave,inthecourseofmyexistence,donesomethingofwhichIamrightfullyveryproud.

  BeforeIdieIwanttoknowthatduringmylifeIhavebroughtgreathappinesstoothers.Friendship,weallagree,isoneofthebestthingsintheworld,andIwanttohavemanyfriends.ButIcouldneverdiefullycontentedunlessIknewthatthosewithwhomIhadbeenintimatehadgainedrealhappinessfromtheirfriendshipwithme.Moreover,Ifeelthereisareallysincerepleasuretobefoundinpleasingothers,akindofpleasurethatcannotbegainedfromanythingelse.Weallwantmuchhappinessinourlives,andgivingittoothersisoneofthesurestwaystoachieveitforourselves.

  BeforeIdieIwanttohavevisitedalargeportionoftheglobeandtohaveactuallylivedwithseveralforeignracesintheirownenvironment.BytravelingincountriesotherthanmyownIhopetobroadenandimprovemyoutlookonlifesothatIcangetadeeper,andmorecompletesatisfactionfromliving.BymixingtheweightyphilosophyofChinawiththehardpracticalismofAmerica,Ihopetomakemylifefuller.ByblendingtherigiddisciplineofGermanywiththegreatlibertyinourownnationIhopetomorecompletelyenjoymyyearsonthisearth.ThesearebuttwoexamplesofthemanythingswhichIexpecttoachievebytravelingandthushaveagreaterappreciationoflife.

  BeforeIdiethereisanothergreatdesireImustfulfill,andthatistohavefeltatrulygreatlove.AtmyyoungageIknowthatlove,otherthansomefilialaffection,isprobablyfarbeyondmyken.Yet,youngasImaybe,IbelieveIhavehadenoughinklingofthesubjecttoknowthathewhohasnotlovedhasnotreallylived.NorwillIfeelmylifeiscompleteuntilIhaveactuallyexperiencedthatburningflameandknowthatIamatlastinlove,trulyinlove.IwanttofeelthatmywholeheartandsoularesetononegirlwhomIwishtobeaperfectangelinmyeyes.IwanttofeelalovethatwillfarsurpassanyotheremotionthatIhaveeverfelt.IknowthatwhenIamatlastreallyinlovethenIwillstartlivingadifferent,betterlife,filledwithnewpleasuresthatIneverknewexisted.

  BeforeIdieIwanttofeelagreatsorrow.This,perhaps,ofallmywisheswillseemthestrangesttothereader.Yet,isitunusualthatIshouldwishtohavehadacompletelife?

Iwanttohavelivedfully,andcertainlysorrowisapartoflife.Itismybeliefthat,asinthecaseoflove,nomanhasliveduntilhehasfeltsorrow.Itmoldsusandteachesusthatthereisafardeepersignificancetolifethanmightbesupposedifonepassedthroughthisworldforeverhappyandcarefree.Moreover,oncethepangsofsorrowhaveslackened,forIdonotbelieveittobeapermanentemotion,itsdregsoftenleaveusabetterknowledgeofthisworldofoursandabetterunderstandingofhumanity.Yes,strangeasitmayseem,Ireallywanttofeelagreatsorrow.

  WiththislastwishIcompletethesynopsisofthethingsIwanttodobeforeIdie.Irrationalastheymayseemtothereader,neverthelesstheycompriseasinceresummaryofwhatItruthfullynowbelievetobethethingsmostessentialtoafullysatisfactoryandhappylife.AsIstandhereonthethresholdofmyfuture,thesearethethingswhichtomeseemthemostvaluable.PerhapsinfiftyyearsIwillthinkthattheyareextremelysilly.PerhapsIwillwonder,forinstance,whyIdidnotincludeawishforcontinuedhappiness.Yet,rightnow,Idonotdesiremylifetobeabedofroses.Iwantittobesomethingmuchmorethanthat.Iwantittobeatrulygreatadventure,neverdull,alwaysexcitingandengrossing;

notsicklysweet,yetnotunhappy.AndIbelieveitwillbeallIwishifIdothesethingsbeforeIdie.

  Asfordeathitself,Idonotbelievethatitwillbesuchadisagreeablethingprovidingmylifehasbeensuccessful.Ihavealwaysconsideredlifeanddeathastwocupsofwine.Ofthefirstcup,containingthewineoflife,wecanlearnalittlefromliteratureandfromthosewhohavedrunkit,butonlyalittle.Inordertogetthefullflavorwemustdrinkdeeplyofitforourselves.IbelievethatafterIhavequaffedthecupcontainingthewineoflife,emptiedittoitslastdregs,thenIwillnotfeartoturntothatothercup,theonewhosecontentscanbedesignatedonlybyX,anunknown,andathingaboutwhichwecangainnoknowledgeatalluntilwedrinkforourselves.Willitbesweet,orsour,ortasteless?

Whocantell?

Surelynoneofusliketothinkofdeathastheendofeverything.Yetisit?

Thatisaquestionthatforallofuswillonedaybeansweredwhenwe,havingwitnessedthedramaoflife,cometothefinalcurtain.Probablywewillallregrettoleavethisworld,yetIbelievethatafterIhavedrainedthefirstcup,andhavepossiblygrownabitwearyofitsflavor,Iwillthenturnnotunwillinglytothesecondcupandtothenewandthrillingexperienceofexploringtheunknown.
