Ahostofindividualsaredividedoverthisissueaboutuniversityranking,anarmyoffolksdeemthatwearesupposedtobeconcernedabouttherankingbecausetherankingisthesolestandardofmeasuringtheschool’scomprehensivelevel,plus,whenchoosingtheuniversityfortheirkids,agrowingnumberofparentstaketherankingintoaccount.However,othersmaintainthatit’snotawiseandrationalideatoviewtheuniversityrankingastheonlystandard,putinanotherway,weshouldnotover-valuetheranking.Therankingistheoutwardstyleoftheuniversity。

Theremaybeseveralreasonsaccountforwhythisphenomenoncouldhappen.Firstandforemost,theglobalizationgreatlystimulatedthespreadofforeigncultures,whichinturnstirredgreatinterestamongChinesestudents;second,collegestudentsare,tosomeextent,forcedtostudycertainforeignlanguagessoastopassexamsorfindgoodjobssothattheycouldnotspareanytimetostudyChinese;lastbutnotleast,schoolshavenostrictdemandonstudents’Chinesestandard.Nodoubt,neglectingthestudyofChinesewillultimatelyholdbackthedevelopmentofChinesecultureandChinesepeoplemaylosetheirculturalidentityinsuchacompetitiveworld。

Thereareanumberoffactorswhichcanbeattributedtothissituation.OneofthemostcommonfactorsisthatthemajorityofpeopleholdaviewthatEnglishisthedominantlanguageintheworldandweshouldgiveprioritytoit.Moreover,althoughChineseisacompulsorycourseinhighereducation,mostprofessorsandstudentshaven’tgivendueattitudetoitasfewercoursesandcreditsaredistributedtoChineseandfewerstudentsattendtheclassorchooseitastheirmajor.AndthefundamentalfactoristhatmoststudentstakeitforgrantedthatChineseistheirmothertongueandthey’vealreadymasteredit。

Variousfactorscanaccountforthissituation.Firstofall,agoodcommandofaforeignlanguagemayhelpyoungpeopletogetagoodjobwhileChineseskillsmaybeofnosignificanceinone’sjobhuntingandeventheircareer.Consequently,somestudentsmaynottreasureChineselanguageanylonger.Apartfromthat,nowadaysfewerandfeweruniversitiesstimulateChineselanguagestudyincampus,whichhascausedittobemarginalized.Underthiscircumstance,Chineselanguagebecomeslessandlesspopularinuniversities.ItisclearthatprofessorsinthefieldofChinesestudyarenotsorespectedthantheywerebefore。
