  Ahostofindividualsaredividedoverthisissueaboutuniversityranking,anarmyoffolksdeemthatwearesupposedtobeconcernedabouttherankingbecausetherankingisthesolestandardofmeasuringtheschool’scomprehensivelevel,plus,whenchoosingtheuniversityfortheirkids,agrowingnumberofparentstaketherankingintoaccount.However,othersmaintainthatit’snotawiseandrationalideatoviewtheuniversityrankingastheonlystandard,putinanotherway,weshouldnotover-valuetheranking.Therankingistheoutwardstyleoftheuniversity。

Onmypersonallevel,however,rankingmattersmuchtoauniversity,butenhancingtheteachingandcomprehensivequalityisonthetopofuniversity’spriority,rangingfromthefacultytoteachingmethodstoteachinginstrumentsandsoforth.Onlyinthesewayscanwebuildupfast-pacedandflagshipuniversitysmoothly。

  Astothisissue,opinionsvaryfrompersontoperson.Somepeopleholdthatuniversityrankingdramaticallypromotesthedevelopmentofuniversityinvariousfields.Butothersmaintainthatuniversityrankingalsoleadstosomeundesirableconsequencessuchasacademicfraudeventodeceivepeople。

  AsfarIamconcerned,everycoinhastwosides.Ononehand,Universityrankingdoesencouragethedevelopmentandgrowthofcolleges.Suchgrowth–thegrandlibraries,splendidstadiumsandfruitfulacademicachievements,hascaughttheattentionoftheworld.We'reimpressedbythesesignsofoureducation'stourtothe21stcentury。

  Ontheotherhand,wehavetopayattentiontoanunexpectedphenomenonthatsomepeoplehaveignoredtheobjectivityofuniversityranking.TakeSouthuniversityofscienceandtechnologyofchinaforanexample,thisuniversityoccupiesthesecondpositioninsomeuniversityrankings.Inthoserankings,itissuperiortoPekingUniversityandTsinghuauniversity.Inaword,weshouldinspiretheadvantagesofuniversityandabandonitsdisadvantages。

  Theremaybeseveralreasonsaccountforwhythisphenomenoncouldhappen.Firstandforemost,theglobalizationgreatlystimulatedthespreadofforeigncultures,whichinturnstirredgreatinterestamongChinesestudents;second,collegestudentsare,tosomeextent,forcedtostudycertainforeignlanguagessoastopassexamsorfindgoodjobssothattheycouldnotspareanytimetostudyChinese;lastbutnotleast,schoolshavenostrictdemandonstudents’Chinesestandard.Nodoubt,neglectingthestudyofChinesewillultimatelyholdbackthedevelopmentofChinesecultureandChinesepeoplemaylosetheirculturalidentityinsuchacompetitiveworld。

Inorderchangethissituationandsaveouridentity,dueattentionshouldbegiventothestudyofChinese.Tobeginwith,governmentshouldputgreateffortsonthedevelopmentofChineseculturetomakemorepeopleproudofit;besides,collegesanduniversitiesshouldmakeexamsmorebalanced,notsimplyemphasizingtheimportanceofforeignlanguages;finally,schoolsshouldalsoattachgreatimportancetothestudyofChinese,makingitacompulsorycurriculum.Throughtheseefforts,Ithink,chancesofchangingthisphenomenonareprosperous。

(2)Inrecentyears,theignoranceofChinesehasbeenprevailingamongthestudents.Incontrast,moreandmorestudentsattachgreatimportancetoforeignlanguagessincetheeconomicglobalization.Inthisessay,Iwilldiscussthefactorsandconsequencesofthisphenomenonandoffermyownviewonit。

  Thereareanumberoffactorswhichcanbeattributedtothissituation.OneofthemostcommonfactorsisthatthemajorityofpeopleholdaviewthatEnglishisthedominantlanguageintheworldandweshouldgiveprioritytoit.Moreover,althoughChineseisacompulsorycourseinhighereducation,mostprofessorsandstudentshaven’tgivendueattitudetoitasfewercoursesandcreditsaredistributedtoChineseandfewerstudentsattendtheclassorchooseitastheirmajor.AndthefundamentalfactoristhatmoststudentstakeitforgrantedthatChineseistheirmothertongueandthey’vealreadymasteredit。

  AsfarasI’mconcerned,thisignorancemaybetheveryfirststeptofurthermoreoverlookChineseculturesandinordertoavoidthisconsequence--tothestudents,theyshouldreadmoreChinesearticlesnotonlytogainknowledgebutalsotobroadentheirscope;totheschoolsandcolleges,theyshouldalterthetraditionalteachingapproachestointerestmorestudentstostudyChinesesuchasspeechesanddramas.Tolive,tolearn,ourChinesestillneedtobepromoted。

(3)WithChina’sopeningup,interculturalcommunicationhasbecomemoreandmorefrequentbetweenChineseandforeigners.Agoodcommandofatleastoneforeignlanguagehasincreasinglybeenanessentialskillforus.People,especiallytheyouths,paymuchmoreattentiontoforeignlanguageacquisitionthanChinesestudy。

  Variousfactorscanaccountforthissituation.Firstofall,agoodcommandofaforeignlanguagemayhelpyoungpeopletogetagoodjobwhileChineseskillsmaybeofnosignificanceinone’sjobhuntingandeventheircareer.Consequently,somestudentsmaynottreasureChineselanguageanylonger.Apartfromthat,nowadaysfewerandfeweruniversitiesstimulateChineselanguagestudyincampus,whichhascausedittobemarginalized.Underthiscircumstance,Chineselanguagebecomeslessandlesspopularinuniversities.ItisclearthatprofessorsinthefieldofChinesestudyarenotsorespectedthantheywerebefore。

  Inviewofthissituation,effectivemeasuresshouldbetakentochangeit.First,thewholesocietyshouldemphasizetheimportanceofChineselanguageinordertomakeitclearthatitisoneindispensablepartofChinesecultureandChineserace.Second,schoolsshouldpromoteChineselanguagestudyandresearch.Inaddition,weindividualsshouldcontributeourowneffortstothestudyandprotectionofChineselanguage。
