Inthe1970s,TheWashingtonPostbecamefamousaroundtheworldbecauseoftwomajorsuccesses.In1971,anorderfromafederaljudgestoppedTheNewYorkTimesfrompublishingthePentagon（五角大楼）Papers,becausePresidentRichardNixonbelievedpublicationwouldendangernationalsecurity.YetKatharineGrahamruledagainstthejudge'sorderanddecidedtopublishthePentagonPapersinTheWashingtonPost,whichwasconsideredamajorsuccessforfreedomofthepress.

In1972,TheWashingtonPosthadanothermajorsuccess.ThroughthelongWatergate（水门事件）investigation,despitegovernment'sthreat,MissusGrahamsupportedherreportersandeditors.ThenewspaperwasawardedthePulitzerPrizeforpublicservicein1973foritsWatergatereporting.Thenextyear,PresidentNixonresignedfromoffice.
