Withnotrainingorexperienceinbusiness,shewasinsecureandshedidnotthinkshehadtheabilitytodoanimportantjob.ButKatharineGrahamdidn'tgiveup.In1969,MissusGrahambecamepublisheraswellaspresidentofTheWashingtonPostCompany.

Inthe1970s,TheWashingtonPostbecamefamousaroundtheworldbecauseoftwomajorsuccesses.In1971,anorderfromafederaljudgestoppedTheNewYorkTimesfrompublishingthePentagon(五角大楼)Papers,becausePresidentRichardNixonbelievedpublicationwouldendangernationalsecurity.YetKatharineGrahamruledagainstthejudge'sorderanddecidedtopublishthePentagonPapersinTheWashingtonPost,whichwasconsideredamajorsuccessforfreedomofthepress.

In1972,TheWashingtonPosthadanothermajorsuccess.ThroughthelongWatergate(水门事件)investigation,despitegovernment'sthreat,MissusGrahamsupportedherreportersandeditors.ThenewspaperwasawardedthePulitzerPrizeforpublicservicein1973foritsWatergatereporting.Thenextyear,PresidentNixonresignedfromoffice.

KatharineGrahamdiedofheadinjurieswhenshewaseighty-four.SheusedherintelligenceandbraverytoimprovetheAmericanmedia.Afterherdeath,theemployeesofTheWashingtonPostwrote:
