Morethan315billionpoundsofplasticlittertheworld’soceanstoday.Mostoftheplasticisgarbagefromtownsandcities,aswellastrashthatpeopleleaveonbeaches.rainwater,winds,andhightidesbringthetrashintotheoceanorintoriversthatleadtotheocean.Onceitisunderthewaves,theplasticbeginstobreakupintosmallerandsmallerpieces.Itoftencollectsinspotscalledgarbagepatches,whichspreadoverlargeareasoftheocean.
Thousandsofmarineanimals----includingwhales,seaturtles,andfish----dieeachyearfromeatingorgettingstuckinplasticbagsandotheritems.Plasticpiecescanalsoinjurecoralandkillseagrass.
WashedAshoreandotherorganizationsareworkingtostopthatfromhappening.Since2010,WashedAshorevolunteershavecollected38,000poundsofplastictrashfrommorethan3000milesofbeaches.TheyhelpedPozzicreatemorethan60sculpturesofmarinecreaturesthatwereharmedbyplasticpollution.
TheartworksondisplayattheNationalZooincludea20-foot-longcoralreef,a12-foot-longshark,anda16-foot-longparrotfish.Eachoneismadefromhundredsofpiecesoftrashlikewaterbottlesandsunglasses.
“Thesesculpturesareapowerfulreminderofourpersonalroleandglobalresponsibilityinpreservingbiodiversityonlandandinthesea,”saysDennisKelly,directoroftheNationalZoo.
