Nevertheless,he9wontheDemocraticnominationandwaselected10.MartinVanBurenofNewYork,AformerPresident,seemedsureofgettingthenomination.ButheopposedmakingtheterritoryofTexaspartoftheUnitedStatesasmotherstate.Hewas11itbecausetherewasslaveryinTexas.VanBurendidnotwantanotherslavestateintheUnion.Asaresult,he12supportamongthoseDemocratswhosupportedslavery.

Atthe1884congress,VanBurencouldnotgetenoughvotestowinthenomination.Thecongressgotinto13.Therefore,theDemocraticleadersdecidedthattheonlywisethingwouldbetoruna"darkhorse",14whocouldunitetheparty.

Andso,oneofthepartyleaders,GeorgeBancroft,proposedthenameofJamesKnoxPolk.Hewon,andtheparty15behindhim,Andhedefeatedhisopponent,HenryClayoftheWhigParty.

Afterthe1844congress,the"darkhorse"candidatesbecameanestablishedfactofnationalpoliticallife.Onehistoriansaid,"Theinventionofthedarkhorsewasinitselfaremarkableproductofourprofessionalpolitics."Thismadeitpossibleforpartyleaderstochoosecandidateswhowerenottiedtocertainideas.Therefore,theyrepresentednothingandhaddevelopedfewenemies.
