I.Overview
ThefollowingsectionprovidesanintroductiontoandthebusinessadvantagesoftwonewservicesinWindowsServer 2003andWindowsStorageServer 2003products,theVirtualDiskserviceandtheVolumeShadowCopyservice.
VirtualDiskService
Anincreasingnumberoforganizationshaveawiderangeofsystemconfigurations,allrequiringrobustdiskandstoragesubsystemmanagement.Theseinclude:
∙Laptopsandothersystemswithoneorafewdisks.Thestorageinthesesystemsisdirectlyattached—eitherembeddedorexternaltothesystem.Generally,suchsystemsrequireonlyminimaldiskmanagement—thepartitioningandformattingofthephysicaldiskstorage.Diskmanagementonthesesystemsshouldbesimpleandstraightforward.
∙Servers,NASappliances,andsimplestorageareanetwork(SAN)configurations.Thestorageinthesesystemsisnetwork-attached,ratherthandirectlyattachedtothesystem.Theseconfigurationsbenefitfrombothdiskandstoragesubsystemmanagementcapabilities.Ideally,themanagementinterfaceisbothsimpletonavigateandeffective.Themoretransparent(non-disruptive)thestoragemanagementisinthesesettings,thebetter.Taskslikemakingadditionalstorageresourcesavailabletoasystem,orre-establishingfaulttoleranceafteramirroreddrivefails,shouldnotdisruptproduction.
∙Largeorcomplexstorageconfigurations.Organizationswithenterprisestorageconfigurationsoftenhavespecializedrequirementsthatareapplication-orsite-specific.
VirtualDiskservicewasdesignedtomeetthediskandstoragesubsystemmanagementneedsforbothsmallandmidsizesystemconfigurationsfordirect,networkattachedandSAN-basedstorage.Additionally,itwasdesignedtobeabletoscaleuptoenterpriseconfigurationswithoutcompromisingthecomplexSANfunctionalityenabledbyhardwarevendors.
StandardizedInterfaceforMulti-VendorStorage
