Itiswellknownthatplastictrashcausesaseriousthreattoseaanimals,butwearestilltryingtounderstandwhyanimalseatit.Typically,researchhasconcludedthatseaanimalsvisuallymistakeplasticforfood.Whilethismaybetrue,thefullstoryisprobablymorecomplex.Forexample,inarecentstudy,weshowedthatplastictrashmaysmellattractivetoseaorganisms.Thatstudyfocusedonseabirds,butnowmyco-authorsandIhavefoundthatplastictrashhasasimilareffectonanchovies(凤尾鱼).
Whenwestartedtheexperiment,wedidnotknowwhetheradultanchoviesusedtheirsenseofsmelltofindfoodatall,letalonewhethersmellmightleadthemtoeatplastic.Totestourhypothesisthatitwould,weputkrill(鳞虾)orplastictrashandcleanplasticinseawaterforseveralhours.Wethenfilteredourkrillandplastic“tea”,presentedittotheanchovyschools,andobservedtheirbehavior.Whenweputseawaterscentedwithkrillintothetank,theanchoviesrespondedasiftheyweresearchingforfood.Whenwepresentedthemwithseawaterscentedwithsmellsofplastictrash,theschoolsrespondedinnearlythesameway,movingasiftheyweresearchingforfood.
Thisresearchconfirmstwothings.First,weshowedthatnorthernanchoviesusesmellstolocatefood.Thisstudyalsosuggeststhatourconsume-and-disposecultureiscomingbacktoupsetusviathefishweeat.
