Abstract

Thenewanddisruptivetechnologyofsmarthomeapplications(hereafterreferredtoasapps)basedonInternetofThings(loT)islargelylimitedandscattered.Toprovidevaluableinsightsintotechnologicalenvironmentsandsupportresearchers,wemustunderstandtheavailableoptionsandgapsinthislineofresearch.Thus,inthisstudy,areviewisconductedtomaptheresearchlandscapeintoacoherenttaxonomy.Weconductafocusedsearchforeveryarticlerelatedto

(1)smarthomes,

(2)apps,and(3)loTinthreemajordatabases,namely,WebofScience,ScienceDirect,andIEEEExplore.ThesedatabasescontainliteraturefocusingonsmarthomeappsusingloT.Thefinaldatasetresultingfromtheclassificationschemeincludes229articlesdividedintofourclasses.ThefirstclasscomprisesreviewandsurveyarticlesrelatedtosmarthomeloTapplications.ThesecondclassincludespapersonloTapplicationsandtheiruseinsmarthometechnology.Thethirdclasscontainsproposalsofframeworkstodevelopandoperateapplications.ThefinalclassincludesstudieswithactualattemptstodevelopsmarthomeloTapplications.Wethenidentifythebasiccharacteristicsofthisemergingfieldinthefollowingaspects:

motivationofusingloTinsmarthomeapplications,openchallengeshinderingutilization,andrecommendationstoimprovetheacceptanceanduseofsmarthomeapplicationsinliterature.

1.Introduction

AsanimportantcomponentoftheInternetofThings(loT),smarthomesserveuserseffectivelybycommunicatingwithvariousdigitaldevicesbasedonloT.Intheidealversionofawiredfuture,alldevicesinsmarthomescommunicatewithoneanotherseamlessly.SmarthometechnologybasedonloThaschangedhumanlifebyprovidingconnectivitytoeveryoneregardlessoftimeandplace(Gaikwadetal.,2015;

Samuel,2016).Homeautomationsystemshavebecomeincreasinglysophisticatedinrecentyears.Thesesystemsprovideinfrastructureandmethodstoexchangealltypesofapplianceinformationandservices(Kimetal.,2015).AsmarthomeisadomainofloT,whichisthenetworkofphysicaldevicesthatprovideelectronic,sensor,software,andnetworkconnectivityinsideahome.Smarthomesareautomatedbuildingswithinstalleddetectionandcontroldevices,suchasairconditioningandheating,ventilation,lighting,hardware,andsecuritysystems.Thesemodemsystems,whichincludeswitchesandsensorsthatcommunicatewithacentralaxis,aresometimescalled"

Since2010,researchershaveanalyzedloT-basedsmarthomeapplicationsusingseveralapproaches.Regardlessoftheircategory,existingresearcharticlesfbcusonthechallengesthathinderthefullutilizationofsmarthomeloTapplicationsandproviderecommendationstomitigatetheseproblems.Researchonsmarthomeapplicationsisdynamicanddiverse.Thissurveyaimstoprovidevaluableinsightsintotechnologicalenvironmentsandsupportresearchersbyunderstandingtheavailableoptionsandgapsinthislineofresearch.Itaimstoshedlightontheeffortsofresearchersinresponsetonewanddisruptivetechnology,maptheresearchlandscapeintoacoherenttaxonomy,anddeterminethefeaturesthatcharacterizethisemerginglineofresearchinsmarthometechnology.Thispaperisorganizedasfollows.InSection1,loTanditsapplicationsinsmarthomesareintroduced.InSection2,theresearchmethods,scope,literaturesources,andstepsinfilteringresearcharticlesaredescribed.Theresearchlandscapebasedonliteratureisalsomappedintoacoherenttaxonomy.InSection3,theresultsandstatisticalinformationofthefinalsetofarticlesinthisstudyarereviewed.InSection4,thebenefitsandchallengesextractedfromarticlesonloT-basedsmarthomesfrom2010to2016arediscussedandclassified.InSection5,theconclusionofthisreviewispresented.2.Method

Thiskeywordexcludesanynon-IoT-basedsmarthomeapplications,suchasthosefoundonsmartgridsandanynon-application-baseduseofsmartcities.WealsolimitedourscopetoEnglishliteraturebutconsideredallloTapplicationsinsmarthomeautomation.Threedigitaldatabaseswereexploredtosearchfbrtargetarticles.

(1)IEEEXploreisascholarlyresearchdatabasethatprovidesthemostreliableandwide-rangingarticlesinthefieldsofcomputerscience,electronictechnologies,andelectricalengineering.

(2)WebofScience(WoS)offersindexingofcross-disciplinaryresearchinsciences,electronictechnologies,socialsciences,arts,andhumanities.(3)ScienceDirectisalargedatabaseofscientifictechniquesandmedicalresearch.ThesethreedatabasessufficientlycoverloTanditsapplicationsinsmarthometechnologyandprovideabroadviewofexistingresearchinawidebutrelevantrangeofdisciplines.EveryarticlethatmetthecriterialistedinFig.1wasincluded.WesetaninitialtargetformappingthespaceofresearchonloTapplicationsinsmarthomesintoageneralandcoarse-grainedtaxonomyoffourcategories.Thesecategorieswerederivedfromapresurveyoftheliteraturewithnoconstraint(GoogleScholarwasusedtogaininsightsintothelandscapeanddirectionsintheliterature).Aftertheinitialremovalofduplicates,articleswereexcludedintwoiterationsofscreeningandfilteringiftheydidnotfulfilltheeligibilitycriteria.Theexclusioncriteriaincludedthefollowing.

(1)Thearticleisnon-English.

(2)Thearticleisfocusedonaspecificaspectofsmartgridsandsmartcities.(3)ThesubjectislimitedtosmarthomesandexcludesloT.Tosimplifythesteps,wereadandanalyzedthefinalsetofarticlesinWordandExcelformats.Moreover,thearticleswereclassifiedindetailusingtaxonomyandalargecollectionofhighlightsandcomments.Thetaxonomysuggesteddifferentclassesandsubclasses,includingfourmaincategories:

review,application,design,anddevelopment.Textswerecategorizeddependingonauthors*preferredstyle,andthecollecteddataandrelevantinformationweresavedinWordandExcelfiles.Allthearticlesfromvarioussourceswereanalyzedindepthtogivereadersacomprehensiveoverviewofthesubject.

3.ResultsandstatisticalinformationofarticlesTheinitialqueryresultedin1798papers:

105fromtheWoSdatabase,268fromScienceDirect,and1425fromIEEEExplore.Thefilteredarticlespublishedfrom2010to2016wereadoptedinthisresearchandgroupedintothreecategories.Inthethreedatabases,45out1753paperswereduplicates.Afterscanningthetitlesandabstracts,1387paperswereexcludedfurther,fbratotalof366papers.Thefinalfull-textreviewexcluded137papers,foratotalof229papersinthefinalset,allofwhichwererelatedtosmarthomeloTtechnologythroughdifferenttopics.ThetaxonomypresentedinFig.2wasusedtoreviewthemainstreamsofresearchfocusingonloTandtheirgeneraluseinsmarthomes.Thistaxonomyshowsthecomprehensivedevelopmentofvariousstudiesandapplications.Theclassificationsuggestsdifferentclassesandsubclasses.ThefirstclassincludesreviewandsurveyarticlesrelatedtosmarthomeloTapplications(3/229papers).ThesecondclassincludespapersonloTapplicationsandtheiruseinintelligentsmarthometechnology(79/229papers).Thethirdclasscomprisesframeworkproposalstodevelopandoperateapplications(125/229papers).ThefinalclassincludesstudieswithactualattemptstodevelopsmarthomeloTapplications(22/229papers).Theobservedcategoriesarelistedinthefollowingsectionsforstatisticalanalysis.ThefinalcategoryincludesstudiesthatattempttodevelopsmarthomeloTapplications.TheseworksdevelopCloudofThingsarchitectureforsmarthomes,loTtechnology-basedsmarthomeservices(Kangetal.,2015),andlow-costsystemsforsmarthomeappliances.AdevelopedsystemtakesinformationfromdevicesandpostsittoTwitter(Lloretetal.,2012).OtherhomesystemsarealsodevelopedonthebasisofloTtechnologies(Jieetal.,2013).OtherstudiesdeveloploTapplicationsonthebasisofsmarthometechnology,anetworkmonitoringsystemfbrmobiledevicesinsmarthomes,andsystemapplicationsinvoice-controlledmultifunctionalsmarthomesystems(MittaletaL,2015).AnintelligentenergymanagementsystemwithapproachesforloTapplicationsinsmarthomesisalsodeveloped.SensornetworkarchitecturesinsmarthomesbasedonloTtechnologyareestablished.AsmartenergymonitoringsysteminloT-basedsmarthomesisdeveloped.AnovelsmarthomeapplicationisdevelopedonthebasisofanarchitectureandmiddlewareofloTtechnologies.SomeworksdevelopasmartgatewayarchitecturetoimprovesmarthomenetworkapplicationsbasedonloT,loTtechnologyforwirelesssensornetworksandsystemsformonitoringtemperature,andloTtechnologiesfbrenhancinghealthsmarthomesystems.SecurityandprivacyfeaturesaredevelopedfbrloTdevices,andsecurityissuesandcorrespondingsolutionsfbrsensornetworksinsmarthomesareexplored.Somestudiesdiscussthedevelopmentofinnova
