Theoilindustrygoeswiththehighendoftherange,whichcouldequalasmuchas10%ofU.S.consumptionforaslongassix
years.Bypumpingmorethan1millionbarrelsadayfromthereserveforthenexttwothreedecades,lobbyistsclaim,the
nationcouldcutbackonimportsequivalenttoallshipmentstotheU.S.fromSaudiArabia.Soundsgood.Anoilboomwould
alsomeanamultibillion-dollarwindfall(意外之财)intaxrevenues,royalties(开采权使用费)andleasingfeesforAlaskaand
theFederalGovernment.Bestofall,advocatesofdrillingsay,damagetotheenvironmentwouldbeinsignificant."We've
neverhadadocumentcaseofoilrigchasingdeeroutontothepackice."saysAlaskaStateRepresentativeScottOgan.
Notsofar,sayenvironmentalists.Stickingtothelowendofgovernmentestimates,theNationalResourcesDefenseCouncil
