Ourpowertoinvestigateandthusunderstandspacechangeddramaticallywhenthefirsttelescopewasangledatthenightsky,(3)increasing(4)asitdidthepowerofthehumaneyeandenablingustounderstandthattheuniverseisfarlarger(5)thanwaspreviouslyimaginable.Theplanetswereseentobeworldssimilartoourown,(6)manyofthemevenhavingtheirownmoons.Soon,itwasunderstoodthattheSunwasjustonestaramongbillionsinthegalaxywecalltheMilkyWay.Some300yearslater,welearntthattheMilkyWayitselfwasjustonegalaxyamongbillionsofothers,(7)spreadacrosstheblacknessofspacelikegreatislandsoflightandmatterfloatinginavastcosmicocean.
Almost400yearsafterthefirstEarth-basedtelescopewasinvented,theHubbleSpaceTelescopewaslaunchedintoorbit,givingastronomers—indeedallofus—thefirstbreathtakinglybeautifulimagesofouruniverse(8)takenfrombeyondEarth.Nothinginhistoryhasallowedustoseesomuchoversuchgreatdistances,fromenormouscloudsofgas(9)wherestarsarebeingborn,tohugeblackholes,andeventonewplanets(10)wherewemightconceivablyfindlife.Notonlythat—ithasalsohelpedustoworkouttheageandnatureoftheuniverse,anddiscovertheincrediblefact(11)thattheuniverseisexpandingatanever-increasingspeed.
Toseeevenfurtherintotheuniverse,manycountriesarenowengagedinbuildingevermoreadvancedtelescopes.Currently,Chinaoperatestheworld’slargestandmostpowerfulradiotelescope,theFASTtelescope,(12)completedin2016.The500-metredishofthe“EyeofHeaven”,(13)asitisknown,isbeingusedinthesearchfordarkmatter,(14)thoughttobecomposedofsubatomicparticlesinvisibletoordinarytelescopes.Thisvastdishalsohastheabilitytoexploreregionsofspacebillionsoflightyearsaway,rightattheedgeofthevisibleuniverse.
