Almost400yearsafterthefirstEarth－basedtelescopewasinvented，theHubbleSpaceTelescopewaslaunchedintoorbit，givingastronomers—indeedallofus—thefirstbreathtakinglybeautifulimagesofouruniverse（8）takenfrombeyondEarth.Nothinginhistoryhasallowedustoseesomuchoversuchgreatdistances，fromenormouscloudsofgas（9）wherestarsarebeingborn，tohugeblackholes，andeventonewplanets（10）wherewemightconceivablyfindlife.Notonlythat—ithasalsohelpedustoworkouttheageandnatureoftheuniverse，anddiscovertheincrediblefact（11）thattheuniverseisexpandingatanever－increasingspeed.

Toseeevenfurtherintotheuniverse，manycountriesarenowengagedinbuildingevermoreadvancedtelescopes.Currently，Chinaoperatestheworld’slargestandmostpowerfulradiotelescope，theFASTtelescope，（12）completedin2016.The500－metredishofthe“EyeofHeaven”，（13）asitisknown，isbeingusedinthesearchfordarkmatter，（14）thoughttobecomposedofsubatomicparticlesinvisibletoordinarytelescopes.Thisvastdishalsohastheabilitytoexploreregionsofspacebillionsoflightyearsaway，rightattheedgeofthevisibleuniverse.
