”protestedChurchillinprivate.Publicly,heonlyremarkedthatitwas“afineexampleofmodernart.”Hisfriendssmiled;

itwaswellknownthatSirWinstondidn’tcareformodernart.

Churchillwassounhappyabouttheportraitthatfinallyhiswifehaditdestroyed.ChurchilldiedatninetyinJanuary,1965.LadyChurchillfollowedhimin1977.Shortlyafterherdeath,thepubliclearnedwhathadhappenedtoSutherland’spainting,andaheatedargumentbrokeout.Thepainterwasunderstandablysad.Theartisticcommunity,shockedandangry,claimedthatthedestructionofthepicturehadbeenacrime.Historianssaidthattheyregrettedthedisappearanceofahistoricaldocument.AllagreedthattheChurchillsdidn’thavetherighttodowhattheyhaddone.
