JamesHarrisoniscalled“TheManwiththeGoldenArm”.TheAustralianmanhassavedthelivesofmorethan2.4millionbabiesbydonatingbloodnearlyeveryweekfor60years.

ThatisexactlywhatHarrisondid.Soonafterwards,doctorstoldhimthathisbloodcontainsarareantibodythatcouldhelpmotherswhohaverhesusdisease,aconditionwhereapregnantwoman’sbloodattacksthebloodcellsofherfetus(胎儿).Inworstcases,itcanresultinbraindamageordeathforthebaby,anduntilabout1967,thousandsofbabiesweredyingeachyearinAustralia.

Beforelong,researchershaddevelopedaninjection(注射剂),calledAnti-D,usingHarrison’sdonatedblood.Becauseabout17percentofpregnantwomeninAustraliarequiretheAnti-Dinjections,thebloodserviceestimatesHarrisonhashelped2.4millionbabiesinthecountry.Atage81,hehadalreadypassedtheagelimitallowedfordonors,andthebloodservicehaddecidedHarrisonshouldstopdonatingtoprotecthishealth.

Inpreviousstudies,researchersfromJapan’sUniversityofTsukubawantedtoexplorethisideabylookingattheeffectofexerciseonthisweakeningofthebrain.Theytestedtheoxygenabilityof60Japanesemenbetweentheagesof64and75whodidnotshowanysignsofdementiaorothermentalillnesses.Next,theylookedatthebrainactivityofeachmanashecompletedamentaltask.Theyfoundthatthefitteraparticipantwas,thelessbrainactivityheusedtocompletethetaskswhencomparedwithhisout-of-shapepeers(同龄人).

Althoughmuchresearchisfocusedonhowexercisemaybenefitanagingbrain,exerciseoffersbrainhealthbenefitsatalmostanyage,andthisincludeschildren.Areviewof14studiesshowsthatmorephysicallyactiveschoolchildrendobetteracademically.Exerciseactuallycausesyourbraintogrowinsize.Sogetmovingandkeepmovingforbestresults.
