  Weknowthathugsmakeusfeeleasyinside.Andthisfeeling,itturnsout,couldactuallywardoffstressandprotecttheimmune(免疫)system,accordingtoanewresearchfromCarnegieMellonUniversity.

“Weknowthatpeopleexperiencingongoingconflictswithothersarelessabletofightoffcoldviruses.Wealsoknowthatpeoplewhoreporthavingsocialsupportarepartlyprotectedfromtheeffectsofstressonpsychologicalstates,suchasdepressionandanxiety,”thestudy’sleadauthor,psychologistDr.SheldonCohen,saidinastatement.“Wetestedwhetherawarenessofsocialsupportisequallyeffectiveinprotectingusfromsensitivitytoinfectioncausedbystressandalsowhetherreceivinghugsmightpartiallyaccountforthosefeelingofsupportandthusprotectapersonagainstinfection.”

Then,theresearchersexposedtheparticipantstoacommoncoldvirus,andmonitoredthemtoassesssignsofinfection.Theyfoundthatbothperceivedsocialsupportandmorefrequenthugsreducedtheriskofinfectionassociatedwithexperiencinginterpersonalconflict.Regardlessofwhetherornottheyexperiencedsocialconflicts,infectedparticipantswithgreaterperceivedsocialsupportandmorefrequenthugshadlesssevereillnesssymptoms.

“Thissuggeststhatbeinghuggedbyatrustedpersonmayactasaneffectivemeansofconveyingsupportandthatincreasingthefrequencyofhugsmightbeaneffectivemeansofreducingtheeffectsofstress,”Cohensaid.“Theapparentprotectiveeffectofhugsmayresultfromthephysicalcontactitselforhuggingbeingabehavioralindicatorofsupportandcloseness.Eitherway,thosewhoreceivemorehugsaresomewhatmoreprotectedfrominfection.”
