LastTuesday'sFedstatementdidsuggestthat,yes,perhapstherewouldcomeatimeforabitofgradualmonetarytighteningbutnotjustyet.TheBankofEnglandhasraisedinterestratesthreetimessinceNovemberinanattempttoensurethatitstaysontopofevents,butevenafterFriday'sstrongemploymentdatatherewerethosepredictingthatGreenspanwouldwaituntilAugustbeforetweakinginterestratesratherthanmovingatthenextmeeting,inJune.Greenspan'sargumentappearstobethathewantstobesurethattherecoveryfromtherelativelymildrecessionof2001isfirmlyentrenched,buttheevidencecouldhardlybeanymoreconclusive.TheriskisthattheFedisnowalongwaybehindthecurve,withallthefactorsinplaceforanotherperiodofdeepinstabilityin
