Ihavebeenteachinginajuniormiddleschool.InmyteachingIhavecomecrosssomeproblems,whichhavebeentroubledmeforsometime.
I’llhavefinishedmystudyinAnqingTVUniversity.IhopeIcansolvetheproblemthroughtheactionresearchsothatIcanapplymyknowledgeandtheoryintopractice.IthinkifIdesigntheactivitieswell,Icouldimprovethestudentsreadingability.
Ⅱ.SummaryofthePreliminaryResearch
1.Problem
IntheprocessofmyEnglishteaching,Ihaveencounteredawidevarietyofproblems,ofwhich,theproblemrelatetostudents’poorreadingcapabilitiesisoneofthemostcommonproblemswhichmakesmeheadachy,itismainlyreflectedinthatthestudentscannotfinishthereadingexercisecorrectlyontime,afterclass,theyhavetounderstandreadingmaterialswiththehelpofdictionary;
whentheyreadsomethinginEnglish,theirreadingspeedisratherslow;
inexaminations,theyalwaysscoredlowinreading,andsoon.Readingisakindofabilitytounderstandandabsorbinformationfromwrittenmaterial,whichisoneofthebasichumanactivitiesofpeople’s.Itisanimportantwaytoacquireknowledge,understandobjectivethingsanddevelopintelligenceandemotion.ReadingabilityisoneofthemostimportantandbasicabilityinthefourabilitiesofEnglishlearning.Lackofreadingabilityhasseriouslyaffectedstudents’achievementsandinterestsinlearningEnglish.
2.Problemanalysis
AccordingtoyearsofexperienceinEnglishteachingaswellastheknowledgeIhaveonthetheoriesofEnglisheducation,Ithinkthatmystudents’poorcapabilitiesinEnglishreadingabilityismainlyduetothefollowingreasons:
(1).Alackofgoodreadinghabits,badreadinghabitshaveseriouslyaffectedthespeedofreading.
(2)AlackofgoodreadingskillsaswellasunderstandingofEnglishwritinghabits,whichmakesitisdifficulttograspthemeaningofEnglishworks.
(3)AlackofadequatevocabularyandlessunderstandingforgrammaticalstructureofEnglishsentences.
1)AnalyticMethod
Basedoncarefulanalysisaswellasreferringtotheadvicesofmycolleagues’,Iputforwardthefollowingquestions:
WhyafewstudentshaveagoodcapabilityinreadingEnglishwhilemostofthemhaven’t?
IfitisanyoneelseexceptmewhoteachmyclassEnglish,isthereanydifferenceinthestudents’scoresofexaminationsofEnglishreading?
Ifthereis,itseemsthatitismewhoshouldberesponsibleforthestudents’poorabilitiesofEnglishreading;
ifthereisn’t,isshowsthatsomeproblemsdoexistwhichhaveanimpactonthestudent’sabilitiesofEnglishreading.
2)CauseAnalysis
Inordertobettersolvetheproblemofstudents’poorabilitiesofEnglishreading,IhavefurtheranalyzedthecauseoftheproblemfromEnglishteaching,thespecificisasfollows:
1.Failingtocorrectthebadreadinghabitsofstudents’.
2.Failingtoestablishthecorrectreadinghabitsofstudents’.
3.Havenottaughtstudentsthecorrectreadingskills.
4.HavenotexplainedthenormsandcharacteristicsofEnglishwritingtostudents.
5.Paynoattentiontothetrainingofthebasicabilitiesofstudents’inEnglishreading.
6.Failingtostimulatestudents’interestinEnglishreading.
3)Questionnaire
Inordertoconfirmmyanalysisaswellasmakesurethecausesleadingtotheproblems,Ihavedesignedaquestionnaire(seeAppendixA)andsentthemtomystudentstofinishit.Thenextday,Ihavecollectedthequestionnaireandanalyzedthefeedback,theresultsshowedthat:
75%ofthestudentsthoughtthattheirabilityofEnglishreadingwaspoor,80%studentsdidnotthinkthattheyhavegoodreadinghabits,while95%studentsdidnotknowwhatagoodreadinghabitis.Inaddition,88%ofstudentsbelievedthattheylackedreadingskills,90%ofstudentsadmittedthattheydidnotunderstandthenormsandpracticesofEnglishwriting,95%ofstudentsadmittedthattheyhadpoorbasicskillsinEnglishlearning,while85%ofstudentsbelievedthattheylackedtrainingforbasicskills.80%ofstudentsindicatedthattheirinterestinreadinginEnglishisrelativelylow.Fromthesedataitcanbeseenthatlackofreadingabilityisacommonproblemwhichwidelyexistsinstudents’learningEnglish,andthecauseofthisproblemismostlyduetoalackoftargetedtrainingandguidance.
4)Brainstorming
WhenIbegantoanalyzetheproblems,Iwasconfusedbyhowtosolvethisproblem,soIturnedtoaskingmycolleagueswhowereexperiencedinEnglishteachingforhelp.Theygavemesomesuggestionsonthisissuewhichenabledmehaveamoreprofoundunderstandingandviewsforthisproblem,thisalsoletmehaveacertaindegreeofconfidenceforthesolutionofthisproblem,aftermatureconsideration,Ibegantolaunchaprojecttosolvetheproblem.

1.TheimportanceoforalEnglish
TrainingofEnglishreadingisthecoreofEnglishlearning,readingabilityisthebasisofEnglishlistening,speaking,writingandinterpretation.TeachingofEnglishreadingcanhelpstudentstomakeuseofEnglishtoacquirevariouskindsofinformationquicklytolaythefoundationforbecometomorrow'
stalentswithprofessionalknowledge,skillsandforeignlanguagecommunicationskills.TrainingofEnglishreadingisanimportantparttoimplementqualityeducation.Astudents’abilityofEnglishreadingreflecthiscomprehensivecapabilitiesandqualitywhichhasdeterminewhetherhecanapplyknowledgeofEnglishandreadingskillstounderstandwrittenmaterialinEnglish,whetherhecanhavehighlyefficientaccesstomoderninformationquicklyandaccurately.Meanwhile,readingabilityisalsothebasisforself-learningability.Modernsocietyhasanincreasinglyhighdemandingforstudents'
readingability,sointheprocessofEnglishteaching,itshouldbepaidasufficientattention.
2.Theroleofthestudents
First,studentsshouldbeinterestedinreading,theyshouldconfidenttoimprovetheirreadingskillsandfostergoodreadinghabits,therebythemasteringrightEnglishreadingskillsandsolidbasicskills.Thentheyshouldthroughfastandaccuratecompletionofreadingmaterialstocorrectlygraspthecontentofthematerials.
3.Theroleoftheteacher
IthinkthatintheprocessofEnglishteaching,theroleanEnglishteacherhasplayedisalwaysaguider,professororsupervisor.He/SheshouldfirstguidestudentstodeveloptheirinterestinreadinginEnglish,itshouldletthemknowtheimportanceofEnglishreadingandhelpthemwithestablishingtheirconfidenceforlearning.Inaddition,itshouldbebasedonthecharacteristicsofEnglishreadingtocorrecttheirEnglishreadinghabits,teachthemthecharacteristicsofEnglishwritingandskillsofEnglishreading,ultimately,itshouldurgethestudentstolearnwordsandgrammartocultivatebasicskillsforEnglishlisteningaswellas.
4.Projectplan
Thisprojectisimplementedinaccordancewiththethinkingofwaysofputtingforwardquestions,identifyingproblemsandsolvingproblems.First,itsumsuprelevantliteraturereviewandtheeducationalexperienceoftheauthor’stoputforwardtheproblemofthestudents’lowreadingability,andthenitdesignsasurveytofindthatstudents’lowreadingabilityisduetotheirreadinghabits,writinghabitsandnorms,readingskillsandEnglishbasicskills,andthenitisbasedontheproblemsfoundtodesigna4-weekprojecttosolvetheproblemofstudents’lowreadingability.

Accordingtoanalysisforpreliminaryproblemsandtheresultsofthequestionnaire,Ihavedeviseda4-weekproject,hopingtoimprovestudents’readingskillsthroughimprovetheirreadinghabits,writinghabits,readingskillsandotherEnglishbasicskills.
