Migratingbirdspushtheirbodiestothephysiologicallimit,whichcreatesmuchheat.Some speciescope by risingtocoolerair duringdaytime.“Ifoverheatingisaprobleminmigratorybirds,anotherwayofdealingwiththatwouldbetoevolvelightercolors”thatabsorblessheat,Delheysays.

Delheyandhiscolleaguesanalyzedover 20,000illustrations of10,618birdspecies,rankingfeatherlightnessforeachspeciesandcomparingthatwithhowfarthebirdsfly.Onaverage,lightnessslightlyincreasedwithmigratorydistance,theteamfound.Thelongest-distancemigratorswereabout4percentlighterthannon-migrators,aneffectthatwasn’texplainedbysize,climateorhabitattypefordifferentspecies.

“It’snotabigdifference,”Delheysays,notingthatmanymigratorsaredarklycolored,perhapsforreasonsunrelatedtoflight.Butthetrendwasremarkablyconsistent.“Verydifferentgroupswithverydifferentbiologiesshowthispattern,”Delheysays.“Thatsurprisedus.”
