Researchersarecurrentlyattemptingtobreedmoreenvironmentallyfriendlycattle,whichgrowfasterandeatless,whichcouldfurtherreducethesector’scarbonfootprintbyreducingtheamountofmethanereleasedbycows.
ProfCoffeysaidthatthedifferenceinmethaneemissionsfrombestandworstcattlewasabout30percentandthatifallUKfarmersusedthemostefficientanimalsthiscouldreducecarbonemissions(排放量)bynearlyathird.
