区别一：
old通常的比较级和最高级分别是older,oldest。
可用于人或物，可用作表语或定语，可与than连用。

Thecathedralistheoldestbuildinginthecity.这座教堂是城里最古老的建筑。
区别二：
elder与eldest主要用于家人之间表明长幼关系。
通常只用于人而不用于物，只用作定语而不用作表语，也不与than连用。

Hiselderbrother（sister）worksinaclothingfactory.他哥哥（姐姐）在一家服装厂工作。
注：
在美国英语中，也可用older,oldest表示长幼关系。

elder与eldest的区别是：
前者指两者中年纪较大的,而后者指三者或三者以上的年纪最大的。
one’selderson指两个儿子中年纪较大的一个
one’seldestson指三个或三个以上的儿子中年纪最大的一个
区别三：
elder和eldest作为形容词，通常只能用作定语，不用作表语；
但若不
是用作形容词（即其后不接名词）而是用作名词，则可以用作表语（此时通常有冠词或物主
代词修饰）。

主要用法
1>
连接主语：
NotonlyIbutalsoTomandMaryarefondofwatchingtelevision.
不仅我，而且汤姆和玛丽都喜欢看电视。
由于notonlyAbutalsoB句式的重点在B上，所以谓语动词一般要与B保持人称和数的一致。
2>
连接谓语动词
TheAmericansandtheBritishnotonlyspeakthesamelanguagebutalsosharealargenumberofsocialcustoms.
美国人和英国人不但语言相同，而且有很多相同的风俗习惯。
注意notonly…butalso连接的动词一般不重复，这与汉语不同。
如汉语说“我不仅懂英语，而且懂俄语”，英语则说“IknownotonlyEnglishbutalsoRussian”，而不说“InotonlyknowEnglishbutalsoknowRussian”.再如：
“气体不仅改变形状，而且改变体积”，英译为“Agaschangesnotonlyinshapebutalsoinvolume.”
3>
连接宾语：
Theproblemfortherecipient（adj.愿领受的/n.收信人）wastryingtoguessnotonlywhothesenderwas,butalsowhathissecretfeelingsmightbe.
问题是收信人不仅要尽力猜出寄信人是谁，还要推测寄信人内心有什么想法。
4>
连接宾语补足语：

浅色和鲜艳的颜色不但使人看了高兴，也会使人更加活泼。
5>
连接表语：

连接状语：
