Thankyouverymuch.

TonightwecometogetherboundbyourfaithinamightyGod,withgenuinerespectandloveforourcountry,andinheritingthelegacyofagreatParty,theDemocraticParty,whichisthebesthopeforredirectingournationonamorehumane,just,andpeacefulcourse.

Thisisnotaperfectparty.Wearenotaperfectpeople.Yet,wearecalledtoaperfectmission.Ourmission:

tofeedthehungry;toclothethenaked;tohousethehomeless;toteachtheilliterate;toprovidejobsforthejobless;andtochoosethehumanraceoverthenuclearrace.

Wearegatheredherethisweektonominateacandidateandadoptaplatformwhichwillexpand,unify,direct,andinspireourPartyandthenationtofulfillthismission.Myconstituencyisthedesperate,thedamned,thedisinherited,thedisrespected,andthedespised.Theyarerestlessandseekrelief.Theyhavevotedinrecordnumbers.Theyhaveinvestedthefaith,hope,andtrustthattheyhaveinus.TheDemocraticPartymustsendthemasignalthatwecare.Ipledgemybestnottoletthemdown.

Thereisthecallofconscience,redemption,expansion,healing,andunity.Leadershipmustheedthecallofconscience,redemption,expansion,healing,andunity,fortheyarethekeytoachievingourmission.Timeisneutralanddoesnotchangethings.Withcourageandinitiative,leaderschangethings.

Nogenerationcanchoosetheageorcircumstanceinwhichitisborn,butthroughleadershipitcanchoosetomaketheageinwhichitisbornanageofenlightenment,anageofjobs,andpeace,andjustice.Onlyleadership--thatintangiblecombinationofgifts,thediscipline,information,circumstance,courage,timing,willanddivineinspiration--canleadusoutofthecrisisinwhichwefindourselves.Leadershipcanmitigatethemiseryofournation.LeadershipcanpartthewatersandleadournationinthedirectionofthePromisedLand.Leadershipcanlifttheboatsstuckatthebottom.

Ihavehadtherareopportunitytowatchsevenmen,andthentwo,pourouttheirsouls,offertheirservice,andhealandheedthecallofdutytodirectthecourseofournation.Thereisaproperseasonforeverything.Thereisatimetosowandatimetoreap.There’satimetocompeteandatimetocooperate.

IaskforyourvoteonthefirstballotasavoteforanewdirectionforthisPartyandthisnation--avoteofconviction,avoteofconscience.ButIwillbeproudtosupportthenomineeofthisconventionforthePresidencyoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Thankyou.

Ihavewatchedtheleadershipofourpartydevelopandgrow.MyrespectforbothMr.MondaleandMr.Hartisgreat.Ihavewatchedthemstrugglewiththecrosswindsandcrossfiresofbeingpublicservants,andIbelievetheywillbothcontinuetotrytoserveusfaithfully.

Iamelatedbytheknowledgethatforthefirsttimeinourhistoryawoman,GeraldineFerraro,willberecommendedtoshareourticket.

Throughoutthiscampaign,I’vetriedtoofferleadershiptotheDemocraticPartyandthenation.If,inmyhighmoments,Ihavedonesomegood,offeredsomeservice,shedsomelight,healedsomewounds,rekindledsomehope,orstirredsomeonefromapathyandindifference,orinanywayalongthewayhelpedsomebody,thenthiscampaignhasnotbeeninvain.

Forfriendswholovedandcaredforme,andforaGodwhosparedme,andforafamilywhounderstood,Iameternallygrateful.

If,inmylowmoments,inword,deedorattitude,throughsomeerroroftemper,taste,ortone,Ihavecausedanyonediscomfort,createdpain,orrevivedsomeone’sfears,thatwasnotmytruestself.Iftherewereoccasionswhenmygrapeturnedintoaraisinandmyjoybelllostitsresonance,pleaseforgiveme.Chargeittomyheadandnottomyheart.Myhead--solimitedinitsfinitude;myheart,whichisboundlessinitsloveforthehumanfamily.Iamnotaperfectservant.Iamapublicservantdoingmybestagainsttheodds.AsIdevelopandserve,bepatient:

Godisnotfinishedwithmeyet.

Thiscampaignhastaughtmemuch;thatleadersmustbetoughenoughtofight,tenderenoughtocry,humanenoughtomakemistakes,humbleenoughtoadmitthem,strongenoughtoabsorbthepain,andresilientenoughtobouncebackandkeeponmoving.

Forleaders,thepainisoftenintense.Butyoumustsmilethroughyourtearsandkeepmovingwiththefaiththatthereisabrightersidesomewhere.

IwenttoseeHubertHumphreythreedaysbeforehedied.HehadjustcalledRichardNixonfromhisdyingbed,andmanypeoplewonderedwhy.AndIaskedhim.Hesaid,“Jesse,fromthisvantagepoint,thesunissettinginmylife,allofthespeeches,thepoliticalconventions,thecrowds,andthegreatfightsarebehindmenow.Atatimelikethisyouareforcedtodealwithyourirreducibleessence,forcedtograpplewiththatwhichisreallyimportanttoyou.AndwhatI’veconcludedaboutlife,”HubertHumphreysaid,“Whenallissaidanddone,wemustforgiveeachother,andredeemeachother,andmoveon.”

OurpartyisemergingfromoneofitsmosthardfoughtbattlesfortheDemocraticParty’spresidentialnominationinourhistory.Butourhealthycompetitionshouldmakeusbetter,notbitter.Wemustusetheinsight,wisdom,andexperienceofthelateHubertHumphreyasabalmforthewoundsinourParty,thisnation,andtheworld.Wemustforgiveeachother,redeemeachother,regroup,andmoveone.Ourflagisred,whiteandblue,butournationisarainbow--red,yellow,brown,blackandwhite--andwe’reallpreciousinGod’ssight.

Americaisnotlikeablanket--onepieceofunbrokencloth,thesamecolor,thesametexture,thesamesize.Americaismorelikeaquilt:

manypatches,manypieces,manycolors,manysizes,allwovenandheldtogetherbyacommonthread.Thewhite,theHispanic,theblack,theArab,theJew,thewoman,thenativeAmerican,thesmallfarmer,thebusinessperson,theenvironmentalist,thepeaceactivist,theyoung,theold,thelesbian,thegay,andthedisabledmakeuptheAmericanquilt.

Eveninourfracturedstate,allofuscountandfitsomewhere.Wehaveproventhatwecansurvivewithouteachother.Butwehavenotproventhatwecanwinandmakeprogresswithouteachother.Wemustcometogether.

FromFannieLouHamerinAtlanticCityin1964totheRainbowCoalitioninSanFranciscotoday;fromtheAtlantictothePacific,wehaveexperiencedpainbutprogress,asweendedAmericanapartheidlaws.Wegotpublicaccommodations.Wesecuredvotingrights.Weobtainedopenhousing,asyoungpeoplegottherighttovote.WelostMalcolm,Martin,Medgar,Bobby,John,andViola.Theteamthatgotusheremustbeexpanded,notabandoned.

Twentyyearsago,tearswelledupinoureyesasthebodiesofSchwerner,Goodman,andChaneyweredredgedfromthedepthsofariverinMississippi.Twentyyearslater,ourcommunities,blackandJewish,areinanguish,anger,andpain.Feelingshavebeenhurtonbothsides.Thereisacrisisincommunications.Confusionisintheair.Butwecannotaffordtoloseourway.Wemayagreetoagree;oragreetodisagreeonissues;wemustbringbackcivilitytothesetensions.

Weareco-partnersinalongandrichreligioushistory--theJudeo-Christiantraditions.ManyblacksandJewshaveasharedpassionforsocialjusticeathomeandpeaceabroad.Wemustseekarevivalofthespirit,inspiredbyanewvisionandnewpossibilities.Wemustreturntohigherground.WeareboundbyMosesandJesus,butalsoconnectedwithIslamandMohammed.Thesethreegreatreligions,Judaism,Christianity,andIslam,wereallborninthereveredandholycityofJerusalem.

WeareboundbyDr.MartinLutherKingJr.andRabbiAbrahamHeschel,cryingoutfromtheirgravesforustoreachcommonground.Weareboundbysharedbloodandsharedsacrifices.Wearemuchtoointelligent,muchtooboundbyourJudeo-Christianheritage,muchtoovictimizedbyracism,sexism,militarism,andanti-Semitism,muchtoothreatenedashistoricalscapegoatstogoondividedonefromanother.Wemustturnfromfingerpointingtoclaspedhands.Wemustshareourburdensandourjoyswitheachotheronceagain.Wemustturntoeachotherandnotoneachotherandchoosehigherground.

Twentyyearslater,wecannotbesatisfiedbyjustrestoringtheoldcoalition.Oldwineskinsmustmakeroomfornewwine.Wemusthealandexpand.TheRainbowCoalitionismakingroomforArabAmericans.They,too,knowthepainandhurtofracialandreligiousrejection.Theymustnotcontinuetobemadepariahs.TheRainbowCoalitionismakingroomforHispanicAmericanswhothisverynightarelivingunderthethreatoftheSimpson-Mazzolibill;andfarmworkersfromOhiowhoarefightingtheCampbellSoupCompanywithaboycotttoachievelegitimateworkers’rights.

TheRainbowismakingroomfortheNativeAmerican,themostexploitedpeopleofall,apeoplewiththegreatestmoralclaimamongstus.Wesupportthemastheyseektherestorationoftheirancientlandandclaimamongstus.Wesupportthemastheyseektherestorationoflandandwaterrights,astheyseektopreservetheirancestralhomelandandthebeautyofalandthatwasoncealltheirs.Theycanneverreceiveafairshareforalltheyhavegivenus.Theymustfinallyhaveafairchancetodeveloptheirgreatresourcesandtopreservetheirpeopleandtheirculture.

TheRainbowCoalitionincludesAsianAmericans,nowbeingkilledinourstreets--scapegoatsforthefailuresofcorporate,industrial,andeconomicpolicies.

TheRainbowismakingroomfortheyoungAmericans.Twentyyearsago,ouryoungpeopleweredyinginawarforwhichtheycouldnotevenvote.Twentyyearslater,youngAmericahasthepower
