Tylerbecamewell-knownnationalityin1938,whenhecarriedhisworkwiththeEight-YearStudyfromOhioStateUniversitytotheUniversityofChicagoattheinvitationofRobertHutchins.

TylerwasthefirstdirectoroftheCenterforAdvancedStudyintheBehavioralSciencesatStanford,apositionheheldforfourteenyears.There,hefirmlybelievedthatresearchersshouldbefreetoseekanindependent(独立的)spiritintheirwork.
