PrideandPrejudicehavebeenstudiedathomeandabroad.Therearealldifferentthemesandanalysis.Athome,ChenYanlingandLiuLikunstudiedtheconsciousnessoffeminineinthenovelsofAusten(2007,03).In2008,XiongYanfeioftheJiangXiBlueSky
Universitycarriesoutcarefulanalysisin"PrideandPrejudice".SongWei,JiangLian(ForeignLanguageCollegeofYanshanUniversity)studiedthefeminismofthe"PrideandPrejudice"in2009.
1.2Purposeoftheresearch
Withthedevelopmentofthetimes,people'sviewsonmarriagegraduallychange.
Differentpeoplehavedifferentviewsonmarriage.Inthecontemporarysocietytheidealofthemarriageisdifferentfrombefore.ItdescribesdifferentmarriageinthePrideandprejudice.Thepurposeoftheresearchistostudytheattitudeofthemarriageaboutthefour
pairsofcouple,throughtheirexperienceshowstheidealofmarriage.
1.3Significanceoftheresearch
Itisverynecessaryforthepeopletotrainacorrectconceptofmarriage,inasociety
whichisfulloftemptations,moneyandinterest.Thecorrectviewoflovemarriageisimportantforapeople,afamily,asocietyevenacountry.Sothecontemporaryyoungpeopleshouldattachimportancetotheconceptofmarriage.InPrideandPrejudicefourmarriagesshowfourtypesofmarriage,itdeeplyanalyzespeople'sviewofmarriage.Tothecontemporarypeople'smarriage,it’senlightenmentandwarn.

JaneAusten,thewriterofPrideandPrejudice,wasborninsouthernEngland,Austen
deliberatelyportrayedtheordinarypeopleandthings,throughthefamiliarpeopleandthatdescriptionrevealsherageBritishgentrylivinglandscape,suchaspropertyinheritanceoffamily,education,thestatusofwomenandthemoralsandcustoms.Herworkispopularwith
profoundfreshandacuity,containingtheperspectiveandthephilosophyofhumannature.
PrideandPrejudiceisaverypopularnovelwrittenbyJaneAustenwholivedform1775
to1817anditisreadwidelyallovertheworld.Itwaswrittenin1813.PrideandPrejudiceis
theoriginalThefirstimpression,istherepresentativeworkofAusten,throughtheproblemof
marriagedescriptionshowsthatBritishsociallife,themarriageisthethemeanddescribes
themiddle-classlifesceneintownshipwiththesatiricaltechniques,PrideandPrejudiceis
oneofthem.Thenovelwasevaluatedastheoneofthemostsuccessfulnovelmasterpieces,
describesthefourpairsofyoungmenandwomeninmarriagethroughheroandheroinelove
entanglement,thedescriptionofthecharactersinthenovelarebasedonmysocialclass;the
descriptionofthecharactersarethewomenandgentleman,syntaxanddictionworksinthesentenceischaracteristic,showingthecharacterofthecharactersandstylesinthenovels
throughthedialogue,thedevelopmentofthenovelisupsanddownsandtherelationshipof
loveandmarriageiscomplex.Theseareattractingalargenumberofreaders,themostimpressiveisthemarriageofthenovel,thispaperanalyzesthefourdifferentwaysof
marriage,finallydrawaconclusion:
thecharacterofeveryoneandbackgroundreflecthisorhermarriageandthedifferentattitudestowardsmarriage,thefourcouplesshowdifferentmarriagetous.
PrideandPrejudiceisJaneAusten’mostsuccessfulnovelinherwritingcareer,andismostpopularnovelsofallhernovels,thenovelispeopledwithcharactersofherownsocial
class.DeeplyimpressedbyfourdifferentmarriagesinPrideandPrejudice.Thatspecialtime
decidedthatpeopleatthattimetakemoneymuchmoreseriouslyevenontheirmarriageand
one’characterreflectshisorhermarriageandtheirattitudestowardsmarriage.Fromthe
ancienttimestothemoderntimes,therearemanystudiesbothathomeandabroadstudyinganddiscussingthenovelboutJaneAustenandhersomeworks.
In1826aftertheworkhasbeenwidelyread,SirWalterScottanalyzedPrideand
Prejudicefromanoverallperspective.Inhisarticle“TheJournalofSirWalterScott”,he
analyzedthefeaturesofJaneAustenandsaidthat“JaneAustenhasatalentfordescribingthefeelingsandcharactersofordinarylifewhichistomethemostwonderfulthatIevermetwith.”ThebackgroundofPrideandPrejudicewasreflectedinhispointsthatPrideandPrejudicewasthedescriptionaboutthelifeandcommunicationinherfamiliarcountry.The
authorJanewasborninacountryclergyman’sfamily,Shewasthefirsttowritenovelsofrealisminthe19thcentury.Sheissinglealltimeandhavingatalentfordescribingtrivialthingsofordinarypeople,inthenovelssheshowsherviewpointsonloveandmarriage.
Inthemodernsociety,alotofpeoplewouldliketopaymoreattentiontothemarriagesinPrideandPrejudice.ThefirstChinesestudyonthemarriageinPrideandPrejudicewould
beZhuAiping,andinherarticle“AttitudeTowardMarriageinJaneAusten’sPrideand
Prejudice”,sheexpressedherthinkingthat“Bythestorieswecansee,itmainlytellsofthelovestorybetweenarich,proudyoungmanDarcyandthebeautifulandintelligentwoman
ElizabethBennet.”WecanrealizethatPrideandPrejudiceisastoryabouttheloveandtheir
searchforaccomplishedhusband.Atthefirst,theyhaven’tattractedanyone’seyes.Weall
knowthatatthefirsttime,whenElizabethaskedDarcytohaveadance.Herefused.Hedidn’tthinkthatanyoneatthevillagecandeservehim.Afterthis,Elizabethpromisednotto
payattentiontohimanymorebecauseofhispride.BothDarcyandElizabethdarenottohavethewildwishoftheirlove.Thoughlatertheyhavecleanedupthemisunderstandingbetweenthemandunderstoodeachotherfurther,therearenogoodearnestfeeling,andcontradicteach
other,nostrongdesireoflivingtogetherbetweenthem.Howhardtimesofthepairyouthtopursueloveandhappiness.Allshallbewell,andJackshallhaveJill.WiththehelpofLady
BurghDarcyandElizabethbecameahappycouple.
Theauthormadeafurtheranalysisaboutthefourmarriages:
Themostrealisticmarriage—Charlotte’smarriage,themostridiculousmarriage—Lydia’smarriage,thehappy
marriage—Jane’smarriage.Themostadmirablemarriage—Elizabeth’smarriage.The
novelalsoreflectstheauthor'smarriageview:
Itiswrongtomarryfortheproperty,money
andposition.Sheemphasizestheimportanceoftheidealmarriage,andregardsmenand
women'semotionasthefoundationofthemarriage.Shesaidthat“itistheinevitableresultofthemarriage,whichinthattimewasbasedontheeconomicconditionandaffectedbythe
familystatus.”
Atthesametime,anotherscholarHuangRongpublishedapapercalled“Thoughtof
MarriageinJaneAusten’Prideandprejudice”.ThepaperagreedthatintheopeningsentenceofPrideandPrejudice,therearetwoimportantwords“fortune”and“want”.“Fortune”isthe
basisofmarriage,while“want”providesthemarriagechanceforthoseunmarriedwomen.
Wecanread“fortune”everywhereinthenovel,and“money”playedanimportantroleinmarriage.Becausewomenalwayswanttolivewiththerichman,theeconomicabilityand
statusisimportantforthem,nootherthantheybecameone’swife,justhadtheirownstatus,
theseemingpreoccupationwithmoneyinconnectionwithmarriageinJaneAusten’sworkmaymisleadmodernreaders.Manygirlsarevanity,inthenoveltheDarcyisrichandhandsome,Ithinkheisthebestchoiceforthehusband,sensiblepeoplemustdevoteseriousthoughttothistopic,sinceitisratherfoolhardytomarrywithouthavingamore-or-less
guaranteedincomeinadvance—notonlywasmarriageforlife,buttherewasnosocialsecurity,oldagepensions,unemploymentcompensation,healthinsurance,etc.
Latter,ascholarcalledXinShulanfromLangfangTeachersCollegeraisedanarticle.The
titleofthearticlecalled“Women’sHappinessSecret—OnElizabeth’sMarriageChoiceinPrideandPrejudice”.Theauthorsaid“awomanwhodidnotmarrycouldgenerallyonlylook
forwardtolivingwithherrelativesasa“dependant”,sothatmarriageistherooftogetout
fromthedifficulties,inwhichcaseshecouldfacetheunpleasantnecessityofgoingtolivewithemployersasadependantgovernessorteacher,orhiredlady’scompanion.”Awoman
withnorelationsoremployerwasindangerofslippingoffthescaleofgentility,becomingan
“oldmaid”wasnotconsideredadesirablefate(sowhenCharlotteLucas,atage27,marries
Mr.Collins,herbrothersare“relievedfromtheirapprehensionofCharlotte’sdyinganold
maid”,andLydiasays“Janewillbequiteanoldmaidsoon,Ideclare.Sheisalmostthreeandtwenty!
”).Becauseallthese,somegirlswerewillingtomarryjustbecausemarriagewastheroutetokeepsecurity,ortoescapeanuncongenialfamilysituation.InPrideandPrejudice,thedilemmaisexpressedmostclearlybythecharacterCharlotteLucas,whosepragmaticviewsonmarryingarevoicedseveraltimesinthenovel:
“Withoutthinkinghighlyeitherofmenorofmatrimony,marriagehadalwaysbeenherobject;itwastheonlyhonorable
provisionforwell-educatedyoungwomenofsmallfortune,andhoweveruncertainofgivinghappiness,mustbetheirpleasantestpreservativefromwant.”Sheis27,notespecially
