Inpastdecades,Ehrlichandothershaverecordedthedeclineofparticularbirdgroups,includingmigratorysongbirds.Alltogether,theystudied529birdspecies,aboutthree-quartersofallspeciesinNorthAmerica,accountingformorethan90%oftheentirebirdpopulation.RosenbergandhiscolleaguesreportGrasslandbirdshavedeclinedby53%since1970—alossof700millionadultsinthe31speciesstudied.Habitatlossmaybetoblame.
