Obviously,theUnitedNationshasnotbeencompletelysuccessfulinitsgoals.Therehavebeenseveralwarssince1945.However,theorganizationhashelpedbringpeacetosomecountriesthatwereatwar.Ithashelpedpeoplewholefttheircountriesbecauseofwars.Ithashelpedbringindependencetocolonies.

ThemainUnitedNationsorganizationisinNewYorkCity,buttheUNhasa“family”ofotherrelatedorganizationsallovertheworld.Theseorganizationstrytoprovideabetterlifeforeveryone.OneexampleisUNICEF,anorganizationthatprovidesfood,medicalcare,andmanyotherservicesforpoorchildrenwherevertheylive.AnotherexampleistheWorldHealthOrganization,whichdevelopsmedicalprogramsallovertheworld.

TherearethousandsofUNworkersindevelopingcountries.Theyworkasplannerstoincreaseproductioninfarmingandindustry.Theyprovidemedicalservices,improveeducationprograms,andspreadscientificinformation.Theydevelopprogramsthatprovidejobsandbetterlivingconditions.Theyhelpcountriescontroltheirpopulationgrowth.

TheUnitedNationsalsoholdslargeinternationalconferences,wherepeoplemeettodiscussimportantworldissues.Oneconferencewasabouttheusesandownershipofoceans.Anotherwasaboutwomen.TherearealsoInternationalYears.Inthesespecialyears,peopleworktogethertoimprovesituationsandsolveproblems.OneyearwastheInternationalYearoftheChild.

Forcenturiescountrieshavefoughteachother,andpowerfulcountrieshavetakencontrolofweakerones.Itisverydifficulttopersuadenationstolivetogetherinpeace.Nevertheless,theUnitedNationsisattemptingtodothis.Itistheonlyorganizationthatunitestheworldinthesearchforpeace.
