westandEnglandinthesouthandeast.TheislandjustwestofBritainiscalledIreland.BetweenBritainandIreland,intheIrishSea,liesthesmallIsleofMan.TheBritishIslesaresurroundedbytheAtlanticOceantothewest,andtheNorthSeatotheeast.

TheclimateoftheBritishIslesismildwithalotofrain.Ingeneral,Scotlandiscolderthroughouttheyear,andreceivesmorerain.ItrainsalotinEnglandandWalestoo,butthetemperaturesaremorepleasant.InthesummermonthsthedifferenceintemperaturebetweenLondonandthenorthcanbeasmuchasninedegrees!

ThecoldestmonthsareJanuaryandFebruary,whilethewarmestmonthsareJulyandAugust.

ThecultureofthepeopleoftheBritishIsleswasinfluencedbythecultureofthepeopleontheEuropeanmainland.Inthefifthcentury,peoplefromdifferentpartsofnorthernEuropesettledinEngland,bringingtheirowncultureandlanguagewiththem.TheirlanguagesformedthebasisforEnglish.Someofthenativepopulationmovedtotheinland,mountainouspartsoftheislands,toIreland,ScotlandandWales,wheretheycontinuedspeakingtheirownlanguages.

In1066EnglandwasconqueredbytheFrench.ForthenextfewhundredyearstheupperclassesspokeFrenchwhilethemonpeoplespokeEnglish.TheresultofthisFrenchinfluencewasthattheEnglishlanguageendedupwithmanyFrenchwordssuchastable,animalandage.

TheUnitedKingdomhasalonghistory.EnglandandScotlandarekingdoms.ThefirsttwocountriesformingtheUnionwereEnglandandWalesin1536.WaleshadalreadybeenconqueredbyEnglandin1283,butitwasnotuntil250yearslaterthattheyformedasinglestate.Scotlandjoinedlaterin1707,whilethesouthernpartofIrelandwasonlypartoftheUKforsometime,andisnowanindependentrepublic.Onlythenortherncounties,makingupNorthernIreland,arestillpartoftheUnitedKingdom.Thesmallerislands,suchastheIsleofMan,areneitherpartoftheUnitedKingdomnorindependent.TheyareruledbytheKingofEngland.

Inmoderntimes,peoplethroughouttheBritishIslesspeakEnglish.However,therearestillpeoplewhoalsospeaktheolderEuropeanlanguages,WelshandIrish.TherearesixspokenlanguagesthatareconsideredtobenativetotheBritishIslesaswellastwolocalaccents.ThatmostofthesearenowthreatenedandmaydisappearisaseriousmattertothepeopleinBritain.Theyrealizethatitisofgreatvaluetorecordandteachthemtotheyoungergeneration.

IntheeighteenthcenturyEnglishmenstartedtodevelopaninteresttotravelaroundtheBritishIslesanddescribethecountryside,thecities,thepeopleandtheirlifeandculture.ReadthefollowingpassageaboutDanielDefoe’svisittoSalisburyinsouthernEngland.

ENGLAND,MYENGLAND

Itistwenty-fivemilesacrossthefieldstoSalisbury.Sheepcanbeseeneverywhereandthegreatnumberofthemisreallywonderful.AllaroundthecityofSalisbury,asfarastwenty-twomilestothewest,andsixmilessouth,downtothecoast,farmersraisesheep.TherecouldbeasmanyassixhundredthousandsheepfedwithinsixmilesofSalisbury,measuringeverywayroundandthetowninthecentre.

Aswetravelledthroughthiscountry,wesawmanyoldrelicsfromancienttimesandruinsofthenativepopulationofthiskingdom.Theseareinterestingtoatravellerwhohasreadsomethingofthehistoryofthecountry.Thecathedralisfamousfortheheightofitstower,whichiswithoutdoubtthehighestandthemosthandsomeinEngland,beingfromtheground404feet.

Salisburyitselfisalargeandfinecity.Itisbuiltwheretworiversetogether.Neitherofthemisverybig,buttheybeealargefiverwhenjoinedtogether,andyetlargerwhenjoinedbyathirdriver,aboutthreemilesbelowthecity.Then,throughadeepchanneltheyflowthroughsomegardens,anddowntoChristchurch,intothesea.

ThecityofSalisburyhastwoimportantkindsofproduceandtrade,whichemploythepoorofagreatpartofthecountryround—namely,makingclothandsheets,calledSalisburyWhites.ThepeopleofSalisburyarehappyandrich.Theirbusinessisdoingwell,andthereisagreatdealofgoodmannersandgoodpanyamongthem.

Ihavewrittenbeforethatthiscountryhashighhills,whosetopsspreadoutintogreenfieldsuponwhichgreatnumbersofsheeparefed.ButIwanttotellthereaderthatthesehillsandfieldsaremostbeautifulwithmanysmallandclearrivers,andrichfieldsbearingfruitandgrain.Allaroundwefindnicelittletowns,villageandhouses,andamongthemmanyofgoodsize.Soyoulookatthefieldsandthinkthecountrywildandempty,andyetwhenyouedownthehillsyouaresurprisedwiththemostbeautifulandrichcountryinEngland.

THEISLANDINTHEWEST

TheislandofIrelandisjustwestoftheUKandisthewesternmostislandinEurope.Althoughasmallcountry,ithasanamazinghistoryofover5,000years.FewplacesontheplanetareaspackedwithhistoryasIreland.Everywhereyoulooktherearecastlesandhistoricalplaces.InIrelandthepastispartofthepresent,partofthepeopleandpartofitsculture.

Formuchofitshistory,Irelandlayhiddenbehinditsbiggerneighbour,GreatBritain.Infact,IrelandwaspartoftheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandIrelandformanycenturiesuntilthe1920s.In1921,thesouthernpartofIrelandbecameindependentandtheRepublicofIrelandwasfounded.Itisastatethatcoversmorethan70,000squarekilometres,orfive-sixthsoftheislandofIreland.Ithasfourprovinces,whichaltogetherconsistof26countiesand6urbanareas.NorthernIrelandispartoftheUK.TheRepublicofIrelandisamemberoftheEuropeanUnion,andusestheeuro(欧元).

Irelandhasamildseaclimate.ThecoldestmonthsareJanuaryandFebruarywithairtemperaturesbetween4to7℃duringtheday.ThewarmestmonthsareJulyandAugust,whenitisaquitecool14to16℃.ThesunniestmonthsareMayandJune,withaboutfivetosevenhoursofsunshineperday.AsIrelandissurroundedbywater,itesasnosurprisethatitrainsquitealot,justasinEnglandandWales.

ThepopulationoftheRepublicofIrelandisthoughttobeaboutthreemillion.Ofthose,overonemillionliveinDublin.Irelandhasayoungpopulation,with44%ofthepopulationundertheageof25.

TherearetwoofficiallanguagesinIreland:

Irish,whichisthenationallanguage,andEnglish,whichisthelanguageofthemajorityofthepopulation.Untiltheearlynineteenthcentury,almosteveryoneinIrelandspokeIrish.ThechangetoEnglishhappenedquickly.By1891morethan85%ofthepopulationspokeEnglish.SinceIrelandbecameindependent,theIrishgovernmenthasrecognizedthatifnothingisdone,thispartofIrishculturewilldisappear.AgrowingnumberofschoolsteachintheIrishlanguageandradioandTVprogrammeshavehelpednearly20%oftheIrishpeopletodeveloplanguageskillsinbothlanguages.

TheearliestIrishartisfoundcarvedonmonumentsdatingfrom2,500-2,000BC.Thelarge,typicalIrishstonecrosses,seenacrossthecountry,datefromtheninthandtenthcenturies.AlthoughIrishculturemostlydevelopedunderthewingsofGreatBritain,ithasaqualityofitsown.Itringswithmagicandthereisadarkandmysteriousfeelingtoit.ThemanycastlesthatarefoundeverywherearoundIrelandaddtothatidea.ThereisforexamplethefamousBlarneyCastle,whichisknownforthestoryoftheBlarneyStone.TheStoneisbelievedtohaveefromScotland,whereinearlytimesitwasusedbykingsbecauseofitsmagicpowers.OnedaytheKingofIrelandsavedanoldwomanfromdrowning(淹死).Theoldladyturnedouttobeawitch.Tothanktheking,shetoldhimthesecretoftheStone.ThespelloftheBlarneyStoneisthatyoucanbeefluentinEnglishinreturnforkissingtheStone.
