itcannowbeorderedfrom,anddeliveredto,anywhereintheworld.

Inconclusion,withoutsuggestingthatalltechnologyisnecessarilygood,Ithinkitisbynomeans“pointless”,inanyway,totrytokeeptraditionsalivewithtechnology.Weshouldnotignoretechnology,becauseitcanbeourfriendandsupportourwayoflife.

Itendtoagreethatyoungchildrencanbenegativelyaffectedbytoomuchtimespentonthecomputereveryday.Thisispartlybecausesittinginfrontofascreenfortoolongcanbedamagingtoboththeeyesandthephysicalpostureofayoungchild,regardlessofwhattheyareusingthecomputerfor.

However,themainconcernisaboutthetypeofcomputeractivitiesthatattractchildren.Theseareoftenelectronicgamesthattendtobeveryintenseandratherviolent.Theplayerisusuallythe“hero”ofthegameandtoomuchexposurecanencouragechildrentobeself-centeredandinsensitivetoothers.

Evenwhenchildrenuseacomputerforotherpurposes,suchasgettinginformationoremailingfriends,itisnosubstituteforhumaninteraction.Spendingtimewithotherchildrenandsharingnon-virtualexperienceisanimportantpartofachild’sdevelopmentthatcannotbeprovidedbyacomputer.

Inspiteofthis,theobviousbenefitsofcomputerskillsforyoungchildrencannotbedenied.TheiradultworldwillbechangingconstantlyintermsoftechnologyandtheInternetisthekeytoalltheknowledgeandinformationavailableintheworldtoday.Therefore,itisimportantthatchildrenlearnatanearlyagetousetheequipmententhusiasticallyandwithconfidenceastheywillneedtheseskillsthroughouttheirstudiesandworkinglives.

Ithinkthemainpointistomakesurethatyoungchildrendonotoverusecomputers.Parentsmustensurethattheirchildrenlearntoenjoyotherkindsofactivityandnotsimplysitathome,learningtoliveinavirtualworld.

Itisquitecommonthesedaysforyoungpeopleinmanycountriestohaveabreakfromstudyingaftergraduatingfromhighschool.Thetrendisnotrestrictedtorichstudentswhohavethemoneytotravel,butisalsoevidentamongpoorerstudentswhochoosetoworkandbecomeeconomicallyindependentforaperiodoftime.

Thereasonforthistrendmayinvolvetherecognitionthatayoungadultwhopassesdirectlyfromschooltouniversityisratherrestrictedintermsofgeneralknowledgeandexperienceoftheworld.Bycontrast,thosewhohavespentsometimeearningalivingortravellingtootherplaces,haveabroaderviewoflifeandbetterpersonalresourcestodrawon.Theytendtobemoreindependent,whichisaveryimportantfactorinacademicstudyandresearch,aswellasgivingthemanadvantageintermsofcopingwiththechallengesofstudentlife.

However,therearecertainlydangersintakingtimeoffatthatimportantage.Youngadultsmayendupneverreturningtotheirstudiesorfindingitdifficulttoreadapttoanacademicenvironment.Theymaythinkthatitisbettertocontinueinaparticularjob,ortodosomethingcompletelydifferentfromauniversitycourse.Butoverall,Ithinkthisislesslikelytoday,whenacademicqualificationsareessentialforgettingareasonablecareer.

Myviewisthatyoungpeopleshouldbeencouragedtobroadentheirhorizons.Thatisthebestwayforthemtogetaclearperspectiveofwhattheyarehopingtodowiththeirlivesandwhy.Studentswithsuchaperspectiveareusuallythemosteffectiveandmotivatedonesandtakingayearoffmaybethebestwaytogainthis.
