itisnotusedwidelyinEnglandorWales(somesecondaryschoolscallthemselveshighschools).

TheFinnisheducationsystemisacomparativelyegalitarianNordicsystem.Thismeansforexamplenotuitionfeesforfull-timestudentsandfreemealsareservedtopupils.Thereareprivateschoolsbuttheyaremadeunattractivebylegislation.
Thesecondleveleducationisnotcompulsory,butanoverwhelmingmajorityattends.Thereisachoicebetweenuppersecondaryschool(lukio,gymnasiuminSwedish)andvocationalschool(ammatillinenoppilaitos,yrkesinstitut).
