三.情态动词
常见的情态动词有:
can能may可以will,would(表意愿)
need需要dare敢must必须
haveto不得不shall,should应该(表义务)
oughtto应该
3.1情态动词的语法特征
1)情态动词不能表示正在发生或已经发生的事情,只表示期待或估计某事的发生。
2)情态动词除ought和have外,后面只能加动词原形。
3)情态动词没有人称,数的变化,即情态动词第三人称单数不加-s。
4)情态动词没有非谓语形式,即没有不定式,分词,等形式。
3.2can/could/beableto
1)can/could表示能力,有“能”、“会”、“能够”的意思(过去时用could),
can只用于现在式和过去式(could)。
beableto可以用于各种时态。
Theywillbeabletotellyouthenewssoon.他很快就能告诉你消息了。
2)只用beableto
a.位于助动词后。
b.情态动词后。
c.表示过去某时刻动作时。
d.用于句首表示条件。
e.表示成功地做了某事时,只能用was/wereableto,不能用could。
HewasabletofleeEuropebeforethewarbrokeout.
=HemanagedtofleeEuropebeforethewarbrokeout.
注意:
could不表示时态时的用法
1)提出委婉的允许请求,(注意在回答中不可用could)。

2)在否定,疑问句中表示推测或怀疑。

3.3may和might
1表示许可或征求对方的许可,有“可以”的意思。
Youmaygonow. 你可以走了。

我用一下你的电脑可以吗?
2回答以may开头的疑问句有如下表达法:
例如:
MayIsmokehere?
我可以在这儿抽烟吗?
-----Yes,youmay.
-----Yes,please.
------No,youcan't.
------No,youmustn't.
------No,you'dbetternot.
表示没有把握推测,猜测,通常只用于陈述句;may放在句首,表示祝愿。
MayGodblessyou!
Youmayberight.
注意:
might表示推测时可能性比may小。
Peter___comewithustonight,butheisn'tverysureyet.

答案B.表可能性只能用may. 此句意可从后半句推出。
3.4must
1表义务,“必须”
例如:
Youmusttalktothemabouttheirstudy. 你必须同他们谈谈关于他们学习的事。
2在否定结构中表不许、禁止
例如:
Youmustn'tleavehere. 你不能离开这儿。
3表坚定的建议
例如:
YoumustcomeandseeusassoonasyougettoShanghai. 一到上海你就得马上来见我们。
4表推测,暗含有很大的可能性
例如:
Hemustbeill.Helookssopale. 他肯定是病了。
他的脸色那么苍白。
2)must表对现在的状态或现在正发生的事情的推测时,must后面通常接系动词be的原形或行为动词的进行式。
Youhaveworkedhardallday.Youmustbetired. 你辛苦干一整天,一定累了。
(对现在情况的推测判断)
Hemustbeworkinginhisoffice.他一定在办公室工作呢。
比较:
Hemustbestayingthere.
他现在肯定呆在那里。
Hemuststaythere.
他必须呆在那。
6)must和haveto
haveto虽属于情态动词,但它有人称、数的变化,它的疑问句否定句的构成也和其他情态动词有所不同。
1,haveto表客观的需要和义务,must表主观认识
例如:
Imissedthetrain,soIhadtotakeataxi. 我没搭上火车,所以我只得打的。
2在疑问句和否定句中,haveto多用助动词do构成,must则直接提前或加not。
Didhehavetodoit?
他得做那件事吗?
Hedidn'thavetodoit. 他不需要做那件事。
MustIcleanthediningroomatonce?
我必须马上打扫餐厅吗?
------Yes,youmust.
------No,youneedn't.
------No,youdon'thaveto.
4.3在否定句中,haveto表示不需要,must表不允许。
Youdon'thavetogothere.你不需要去那儿。
Youmustn'tgothere?
你不可去那儿。
haveto可以用于较多的时态,must仅用于现在时和将来时,haveto表示客观原因,不得已而为之,must侧重内在的职责。
Wemustlearnmoreandmoreknowledgefortheimprovementofourselves.
Sinceitisraining,wehavetostayathome.
3.5shall/will/would
.will和would的用法
6.1will,用于构成将来时是助动词。
用于表示“意志”“决心”“请求”是情态动词。
would亦同理。
例如:
He'llbeherethisafternoon. 今天下午他会来这儿。

请您告诉她说我在这儿,好吗?
(情态动词)
6.2用于各种人称,表示“意志”“决心”“允诺”
例如:
Iwilltry. 我愿一试。
6.3在疑问句中用于第二人称,提出请求或询问
例如:
Ifyouwanthelp,letmeknow,willyou?
如果你需要帮助,让我知道,好吗?
Willyoutypethis,please?
请打印这个,好吗?
Won'tyousitdown?
请坐下,好吗?
6.4would比will客气委婉
例如:
Wouldyouhelpus,please?
请您帮助我们,好吗?
(表请求)
I'dgotherewithyou. 我要和你一块到那儿去。
(表意愿)
Dadwouldn'tallowit. 爸爸不会允许这件事。
(表许可)
shall和should的用法
7.1shall用于构成将来时是助动词,shall用于征求对方的意见,表示“决心”是情态动词
例如:
PerhapsIshallpayavisittoEnglandthiswinter. 可能今年冬天我会去英国观光。
(构成一般将来时,助动词)
ShallIturnonthelight,Mom?
妈妈,我把灯打开好吗?
(用于征求对方的意见,情态动词)
Ishallbethere. 我会到那儿去的。
(表“决心”,情态动词)
7.2should用于构成将来时是助动词。
should用于表示“应当”“猜测”是情态动词
例如:
Wethoughtweshouldneverseeyouagain. 我们以为再也见不到你了。
(构成一般过去将来时,助动词)
Ishouldwritesomeletterstonight.今晚我得写几封信。
(表“应当”,情态动词)
Theyshouldbetherebynow.他们现在可能到了。
(表“猜测”,情态动词)
3.6should和oughtto
should和oughtto都为"应该,义务,责备,推测"的意思,可用于各种人称。

表示要求,命令时,语气由should(应该)、hadbetter最好)、must(必须)渐强。
3.7need和dare
need既可用作情态动词,又可用作实义动词。
作情态动词时,没有数和人称的变化,后接动词原形;作实义动词时,有数的变化和人称的变化,后接带to的不定式。
5.1用于否定句,表“不必”
例如:
Youneedn'tworry. 你不必担心。
Idon'tthinkyouneedworry. 我想你不必担心。
5.2用于疑问句,表“需要吗”
例如:
Needyougo?
你得去吗?
-----No,Ineedn't.不必。
-----Yes,Imust.是的,我必须去。
5.3need用作实义动词时,要注意始终以实义动词的标准贯彻到底
例如:
(正确)Doyouneedtogothere?
(错误)Doyouneedgothere?
2)dare+V原表示敢不敢,用于现在时或将来时

3.8wouldrather和preferto
1)wouldratherdo
wouldrathernotdo
wouldrather…than… 宁愿……而不愿。
还有wouldsooner,hadrather,hadsooner都表示"宁愿"、"宁可"的意思。

Iwouldratherstayherethangohome.=Iwouldstayhereratherthangohome.
