In1452oneofthegreatestpaintersandinventors,LeonardodaVinci,wasborn.HisfamilywasverypoorandhegrewupintheItaliancountryside.ButhisdrawingabilityallowedhimtostudyunderthefamouspainterfromFlorence,calledVerrocchio.Leonardograduallylearnedtheskillsneededtobeagreatartistandbythe1480shehadbeguntoproducepaintingsofhisown.Unfortunately,atthistimepaintingdidnotalwaysprovideasteadyincome,sotheyoungLeonardodevelopedhisdrawingskillstoearnmoneyinotherways.Helearnedtodesignwhateverhisemployerwanted:

cities,canals,bridgesorweapons.

Leonardobecameinterestedinmachineswhenhewasaboy.Someofhisearlydrawingsshowedclearlyhowvariousmachinepartsworked.WhilehewasstudyingunderVerrocchio,Leonardoobservedandusedavarietyofmachines.Bystudyinganddrawingthem,Leonardogainedknowledgeabouttheirdesignandstructure.ArtistsinLeonardo’stimeknewhowtobuildandrepairmanyfamiliarkindsofmachines,butnobodyseemedtohavethoughtaboutinventingnewones.

However,Leonardowasdifferent.Hedevelopedanewattitudetowardsmachines.Herealizedthatbyunderstandinghoweachseparatemachineworked,hecouldimprovethemandcombinethemindifferentwaystoimproveexistingmachines.Inthiswayhebegantodesignmachinesnoonehadeverseenbefore.Hesetouttowritethefirstsystematicexplanationofhowmachinesworkandhowthepartsofamachinearecombinedinthewhole.Hisdrawingskillsenabledhimtoproducecleardrawingsofhismechanicalideaseasily.Evenmorethanfivehundredyearslater,manyofhisdesignscanstillbeusedtocreateperfectworkingmachines.
