Theresearchersfoundthatchildren’sself-conceptoftheirabilityinmathpredictedlatermathachievement,whiletheirself-conceptoftheirabilityinreadingpredictedlaterreadingachievement.
Thefindingsuggeststhatthelinksbetweenself-conceptofabilityandlaterachievementarespecifictoareas;thatis,thereisalinkfromstudents’self-conceptaboutreadingtoreadingachievement,andfromstudents’self-conceptaboutmathtomathachievement.
“Itisnotunusualtoseestandardizedmeasuresofachievementpredictachievementlaterinschooling,butitshowsthatthereismoretounderstand.”saysstudycoauthorPamelaDavis-Kean.
Theresearchalsoshowedthatsuccesswasnotlimitedtostudentswhoperformatthetoplevels.
