AGENERALINTRODUCTIONTOTHEWESTERNEDUCATIONALENVIRONMENT

SouthAfricaisconsideredtohaveoneofthebesteducationalsystemsintheworldandsince2005hasfocusedheavilyonliteracy,mathematicsandtheAfricancultureofart,historyandmusic

TheAustralianeducationalsystempreparesstudentsforadultlifeandmakessurethatallstudentshaveknowledgeandaveryclearunderstandingoftheworldweallshare.

MeanwhiletheEnglisheducationalsystempreparesstudentsforopportunities,responsibilitiesandtheexperiencesoftheadultlifetheywillhaveinthefuture.

TheAmericaneducationalsystemisconsideredoneoftheworstintheworldwithverybadlypaidteachers.ThemancollectinggarbageinthestreetsearnsmoremoneythanAmericanteachers.Thereareveryovercrowdedclassroomsandsomeschoolsdonothaveenoughmoneytolookaftertheirstudentsproperly.

Furthermore,Americanteachershaveeightweekssummerholidayseachyearbutdonotreceivepayforallthistime.Manyareforcedtofindworkaswaitersorserveinashoptosupporttheirfamiliesorthemselvesduringthistime.

ManyexcellentAmericanschoolteachersnowworkinforeigncountriessuchasChinawhereeducationandteachersarerespected.

TEACHERSANDTEACHINGBELIEFSINWESTERNCOUNTRIES

Mostteachersoftheworldteachwithbooks,inaclassroomwithablackboardbutitisthecommunicationskillsandcultureofeachcountryallovertheworldthatcreatesthedifferencesinourclassrooms,andyetinmanyways,weareallthesame.

WebelieveourWesternteachersmusthaveakindheart,beverypatientwithastronggenerosity,enduranceandstrength.Furthermore,inourclassroomthestudentisthemostimportantpersonnottheteacher.Wearetheretohelp,adviseandencouragestudentsontheirjourneytoadulthood.

Wedonotbelieveinshoutingatastudentiftheygetananswerwrong,itisnotaterriblecrimebecausenexttime,orthetimeafterthat,orthetimeafterthattheywillgetitrightifyouencourageandguidethemalong.Wefirmlybelieveinthewestthatyou,asateachersetstudentsonthepathforsuccess.Ifyoushoutatastudentenoughtheywillloseheartandnevergetitright.Surelyateacherencourages,helpsandinspiresstudentstodobetternotonlyforthemselvesbutfortheirparentsandChinaWeallneedtoaskourselveshowmanygoodstudentshavebeenlosttous,andourcountries,becauseofbadteachingbothhereandinthewest.

Thebond,andcommunication,formedbetweenateacherandstudentisveryimportanttous,infact,weconsiderthisoneofthemostimportantresponsibilitieswehave.Webecomefriendsofakindandthisfriendship,andguidancecontinueslongintoadulthood.WhenmystudentsachieveinadultlifetheycomeandtellmeandIfellsoproudandhappyforthem.

Aswesternteachersweconstantlymovearoundtheclassroomandtry,everylesson,totalktoeachindividualstudent.Ialsomakedirecteyecontactwithstudentsbecauseinthewesternculturewebelievethatyouarenotagoodpersonunlessyoulookapersondirectlyintheeyewhenspeakingtothem.Mystudentsareencouragedtogetupandwalkovertomewhentheyhaveaquestionorneedhelp.

IteachEnglishsomyclassroomisverynoisybecausewebelievethatstudentsmusttalkinEnglishfortheentireclasstomeortoeachother.HowelsewilltheylearntospeakEnglish?

Italkforonly20%ofmyclasstimeandthestudentsspeakEnglishforupto80%.

Finally,onthesubjectofteachersandteachingwebelievethatawesternteachershouldbesenttoanewschooltoteacheveryfewyearstolearnnewskillsandideasandtheteacherwillalsogetafreshapproachtoteaching.WhenweforeignteachershereatNo1MiddleSchoolgohomewewilltakewithusmanythingswehavelearnthereandwillbemuchbetterteachers,withmanynewideas,forthisexperience.

SOMEDIFFERENCESBETWEENCHINESEANDWESTERNTEACHERS

StudentsarethesametheworldoverbutinChinathestudentsaresorespectful,politefriendlyandwellmannereditisadelighttoteachhere.WeforeignteachersconsiderthattheChinesestudentsaregenerallymuchhappierwithaverystronglovenotonlyfortheircountrybutfortheirparentsaswell.Thisisnotalwaysapparentinthewesternculture.

Thereismuchmorepressureonthestudentsheretoachievetopmarksandsoentertopuniversities.Thewesterneducationalsystemhaschangedbecausewefoundthatwehadsomanypeoplewithdegreeswhoonlywantedprofessionalwork,butwhowasgoingtofixthelightswhentheywerenotworkingordrivethetaxis?

.Wenowrecognizethevalueofchoiceforstudentsbecauseweallcannotgettopmarksandmanystudentswillnevergettopmarksbutwillgotoleadhappyandsuccessfullives.

Studentsinthewestusuallystartschoolat9amandfinishat3.30pm,leavingthemplentyoftimetobecreative,playsportandlearnaboutlifeingeneral.Allofthewesterneducationalsystemsrecognizetheimportanceofteachingtheyoungabouttheirfuturelivesasadultsandtheresponsibilitiestheyface.Werecognizeinthewestthatthesestudentsarealwaystired,becausethatisthetimeintheirliveswhentheyaregrowingtotheirfullheight,andyoumayhavenoticedthatwewesternersareatallraceofpeople.
