foodsuppliesstoppedandtheworklosswasverygreat.Beforethegreatoutbreakended,ithadkilledatleast15millionpeople.

Thefirstbigadvancewasmadein1933,whenateamofBritishdoctorsfoundthetypeAinfluenzavirus.In1940adoctoroftheUnitedStatesfoundtypeB.LatertypeCwasfound,alongwithmanysub-groupsoftypesAandB.VaccineswerepreparedandusedwidelybythearmiesduringtheSecondWorldWartopreventoutbreaks.

Thefluvirusprovedtrickierthanmost.Avaccinegoodagainstonetypegavenoprotectionagainstanother.IndeedtypeAviruschangesitsnaturesoquicklythataperfectlygoodvaccinemayloseitsvaluebecauseofthechange.Thisincreasestheneedforthespeedydiscoveryoffluoutbreaks,sothatstocksoftherightvaccinecanbepreparedquicklyafteranoutbreak.StartingsuchawarningsystemisoneofthefirstthingsdonebytheWorldHealthOrganization.
