Atfirst,mydadwasnotinfavorofmemarryingWillbecauseWillisblack.Iguessmydadwasabitofaracist.Unfortunately,noargumentscouldcounterdad'sbeliefs.Despitehisprotests,though,WillandIdecidedtogothroughwithourwedding.OnamarvelousJunedayweweremarriedinthepark.Theweddingwentoffwithoutanyhostilewordsorembarrassingexchanges.Itwasactuallyquitebeautiful.Therewasjustoneproblem.Manyofourfriendsandrelativesdidn'tattendourwedding.Ihadtoconcludethatmydadwasnottheonlyprejudicedpersonweknew.Otherthanmyfather,noonehadcomeouttospeakagainstmyrelationshipwithWill.Itdidnotseemappropriateforthemtoshowtheirresistancetoourmarriageinthisway.MydadhadstrongreservationsaboutmymarriagetoWill,butatleasthewasthere.WillandIdecidedtoovercomethisburdenbyshowingeveryonehowwrongtheywere.Wewantednotonlytoloveoneanother,butalsotodefyracialhatredbylovingoneanother.Weprobablyweren'tbeingallthatrealistic,butwedidsucceedwithoneperson.MydadandWillhavedevelopedanamazingfriendship.Mydadsayshehasforgottenwhyheeverhadanydoubtsaboutourmarriage.

Whatdoweknowaboutlove?

Isit,assomepeoplewouldsuggest,amysteriousforce?

Orcanitbeexplainedandpossiblyevencreated?

Well,eveninthisscientificandreason-drivenage,loveseemsstilltodefytotalunderstanding.Wecan,however,knowsomethingaboutloveandmakestrongerconnectionsbetweenindividuals.

Onethingthatseemstoaffectloveisdistance.Thecommonideaisthatthelovebetweenpeoplegrowsastheyareseparated.Sometimesitistruethatlongingforsomeonewhohasgoneoverseasbecomesmoreintense.

Somethingthatnourishesloveisdanger.Sendbothloverstodangerousplacesandtheywillenduplovingeachothermore.Thiscouldbecausedbytheworryitdevelops.Itcouldalsobethatfeelingsofuncertaintyorneedtransformintolovewithtime.

Lovegivesuswarmth,courage,andafeelingofbeingsafe,butitalsodemandsselflessdevotionandsacrifice.Ifyouaretrulycommittedtofindingtruelove,youshouldmakeyourselfmoreinteresting.Dothingsthatyouenjoyandtrytomeetpeoplewhoshareidenticalinterests.

Unit5

Mysonhasstartedtohangoutwiththewrongtypeofboys.HeisfifteenyearsoldanduntilrecentlyIhadalwaysbeengratefulforhoweasyhehasbeentoraise.Lately,though,hehasceasedtolistentowhatIsay.Heusedtobesuchasweetboy,butbeinginhighschoolseemstohavehardenedhimagainstauthorityfigures.Thechangeinhisattitudehasbeenverynoticeableeventohisteachers.

TheotherdayIaskedhimtocomestraighthomeafterschool,butinsteadherebelledandstayedoutuntilteno'clock.LaterIfoundoutthathehadskippedschoolcompletelythatday.Ifoundoutthathewaswitha(n)bunchofboyswhooftencausetrouble.Idecidedtoforbidhimtodoanythingwiththoseboys,buthedidn'tlistentome.Inspiteofmyobjectionstohimbeingwiththoseboys,hewaswiththemtheverynextday.

Afriendofminehasasonwhoishavingidenticalproblems.Shedecidedtogivehimachangeofsceneryandsenthimtoaprivateschool.I'mnotsurethisisthebestsolution,though.Youcan'tjustchangeaboy'sbehaviorbychanginghisschooleverytimehedoessomethingwrong.Itisbettertohelpakidestablishagoodsetofcorevalues.

Unit6

Myname,Bobby,isusedbothforboysandgirls.Girlsspellit"Bobbie".Itischaracteristicforlittleboystobegivenanamewitha"y"soundattheend.Forexample,IoftenhadaJimmy,JohnnyorBillyinmyclasses.Inmysecondgrade,IalsohadaBobbie.Inordernottoconfuseuswhenshecalledournames,ourteacherassignedusthenames"BobbieGirl"and"BobbyBoy".Thiscausedmealotoftroubleontheplayground.There,myfriendslabeledme"BobbieGirl".Formyfriends,theapparentcontrastbetweenmynameandmysexwasthesourceofmuchlaughter.Thefactthattheylabeledmeasagirlwasveryembarrassing.IhadatendencytocompensateformynamebyactingmorelikeaboythanImighthaveotherwise.Ithrewmorerocksandyelledlouderthanthesumofalloftheotherboysaddedtogether.Thereal"BobbieGirl",conversely,actedmorelikeagirl.Whenmyteacherrealizedshehadmadeamistake,shestoppedcallingus"BobbieGirl"and"BobbyBoy".Unfortunately,myfriendsneverforgotorceasedcallingme"BobbieGirl".Thirdgradewasanimprovement;theoriginal"BobbieGirl"wasinadifferentclass.Also,Irequestedtheteacherjustcallme"Bob".
