MydearReynolds,-

EversinceIwrotetomyBrothersformSouthhamptonIhavebeeninataking,andatthismomentIamabouttobecomesettled,forIhaveunpackedmybooks,putthemintoasnugcorner-pinnedupHaydon-MaryQueenScotts,andMiltonwithhisdaughtersinarow.InthepassageIfoundaheadofShakspearewhichIhadnotbeforeseen.ItismostlikelythesamethatGeorgespokesowellof;forIlikeitextremely.Well-hisheadIhavehungovermyBooks,justabovethethreeinarow,havingfirstdiscardedafrenchAmbassador-nowthisaloneisagoodmorning'swork.

YesterdayIwenttoShanklin,whichoccasionedagreatdebateinmyMindwhetherIshouldlivethereoratCarisbrooke.Shanklinisamostbeautifulplace-slopingwoodandmeadowgroundreachesroundtheChine,whichisacleftbetweentheCliffsofthedepthofnearly300feetatleast.Thiscleftisfilledwithtrees&bushesinthenarrowparts;andasitwidensbedomesbare,ifitwerenotforprimrosesononeside,whichspreadtotheveryvergeoftheSea,andsomefishermen'shutsontheother,perchedmidwayintheBallustradesofbeautifulgreenHedgesalongtheirstepsdowntothesands.-Butthesea,Jack,thesea-thelittlewaterfall-thenthewhitecliff-thenSt.Catherin'sHill-"thesheepinthemeadows,thecowsinthecorn."-Then,whyareyouatCarisbrooke?

Iwillgetoverthefirstpartofthis(unsaid)LetterassoonaspossibleforitrelatestotheaffairofpoorCrips-ToaManofyournaturesuchaLetterasHaydon'smusthavebeenextremelycutting-WhatoccasionsthegreaterpartoftheWorld'sQuarrels?

Simplythis,twoMindsmeetanddonotunderstandeachothertimeenoughtopreventanyshockorsurpriseattheconductofeitherparty-AssoonasIhadknownHaydonthreedaysIhadgotenoughofhischaracternottohavebeensurprisedatsuchaLetterashehashurtyouwith.
