Computersarearelativelynewinvention.Thefirstcomputerswerebuiltfiftyyearsagoanditisonlyinthelastthirtyorsoyearsthattheirinfluencehasaffectedoureverydaylife.Personalcomputerswereintroducedasrecentlyastheearlyeighties.Inthisshorttimetheyhavemadeatremendousimpactinourlives.Wearenowsodependentoncomputersthatitishardtoimaginewhatthingswouldbeliketodaywithoutthem.Youhaveonlygottogointoabankwhentheirmaincomputerisbrokentoappreciatethechaosthatwouldoccurifcomputersweresuddenlyremovedworld-wide.

Whatisofcrucialimportance,inmyopinion,ishowwedefine"responsibleforbringingthechildrenup."Atitssimplest,itcouldmeangivingthefinancialsupportnecessarytoprovideahome,foodandclothesandmakingsurethechildissafeandreceivesanadequateeducation.Thiswouldbethebasicdefinition.
Thereis,however,anotherpossiblewayofdefiningthatpartofthequotation.Thatwouldsayitisnotjustthefather'sresponsibilitytoprovidethebasicsforhischildren,whilehiswifeinvolvesherselfintheeverydayactivityofbringingthemup.Rather,heshouldsharethosedailyduties,spendasmuchtimeashisjoballowswithinhischildren,playwiththem,readtothem,helpdirectlywithintheireducation,participateveryfullyintheirlivesandencouragethemtosharehis.
Itisthissecond,fuller,conceptof"fatherhood"thatIaminfavorof,althoughIalsorealizehowdifficultitistoachievesometimes.Theeconomicanddevelopmentsituationinmanycountriesmeansthatjobsaregettingmore,notless,stressful,requiringlonghoursandperhapslongjourneystowork
