ThemajortextbookisRobertDay's"HowtoWriteandPublishaScientificPaper."Youwillalsoneedourcoursebook"BiomedicalWritingCourse"anditsSupplementaryReadingBook.Ifyouneedthiscoursepacket,pleasecontactMs.ZhangJian.

4.SomefeaturesofourBiomedicalWritingCourse

OurBiomedicalWritingCourseisanon-linedistanceeducationprogramgivenviaInternet.Itwasoriginallydesignedforindividualsfrom11ChinaMedicalBoardGranteeInstitutionsinChinawhoareactiveinlaboratory,clinical,oreducationalresearchandinnovation,andwhoareseeking,withinstitutionalencouragement,toobtaininternationalaswellasChineserecognitionforexcellenceinthenextfewyears.Atpresent,theprogramcapacitywillpermitabout50individualsperyeartoparticipatefullyinthecourseactivities,whichculminateinpreparationandrevisionofanEnglish-languagemanuscriptforsubmissiontoaninternationaljournal.Thenumberofindividualswhocan"audit"thecoursewillbelimitedonlybytheavailabilityofnetworkterminalsandprivatetutors.However,itisnecessaryforthosewhowanttoauditthiscoursetopurchasethepacketofcoursematerialsfromtheprogramheadquarters.

TheheartofthecoursewillbeaseriesoflessonsviaourOnlineClassroom,orthroughe-mailorFaxifspecialarrangementshavebeenmade.Onelesson,includinganexercisetosubmit,willbegiveneachweekthroughouttheschoolyear.Participantscandothelessonanytimeduringtheweek.Theelectroniclessonswillbesupplementedbyapacketofcoursematerials,suchasmodelwritings,andthetextbook"HowtoWriteandPublishaScientificPaper."

Mostlessonswilldealwithaspectsofwritingscientificpapers;forexample,atleastonelessonwilladdresseachmajorsectionofthepaper,andlessonswilladdressthepublicationprocessandaspectsoflanguageespeciallypertinenttoscientificwriting.Othertopicswillincludeuseofresourcessuchasinstructionstoauthors,preparationofconferencereportsandpostersessions,andwritingofgrantapplications.

ThemainprojectinthecoursewillbethewritingandrevisionofascientificpaperinEnglish.Youwillpreparethepaperonesectionatatimeasthecourseprogresses.Thispaperinitiallywillbereviewedandeditedbyatraineeintheeditorcertificateprogram.ItwillthenreceivefurtherdetailedreviewandeditingbyanexperiencedAmericanbiomedicaleditor.PaperswillbedistributedtovariousAmericaneditors,bothtoavoidoverburdeninganyoneindividualandtomatcheachpaperwithaneditorexperiencedinappropriatecontentarea.Thisinternationalreviewwillprovidefeedbackhelpfulinrevisingthepapers.ItisexpectedthatafterincorporationofsuggestionsbytheAmericaneditors,thepaperswillbeessentiallyreadyforsubmissiontointernationaljournals.

Wearepleasedtowelcomeyou,theforthgroupofparticipantsinthebiomedicalwritingprogramfundedbytheChinaMedicalBoardofNewYork.Theprogramhasnowsuccessfullyentereditsforthyear.Duringthepast3schoolyears,about180scientistsandphysiciansfrom11medicaluniversitiesthroughoutChinahavecompletedthecourse,whichincludesonlineinstruction.TheyhavelearnedmuchabouthowtowriteanEnglish-languagescientificpaperandpublishitinaninternationaljournal,andduringthecoursetheyhavewrittenscientificpapersandreceivedfeedbackfromAmericaninstructorsandeditors.

Forthenexttwosemesters,wewillusetheChineseMedicalInformationNetwork(CMINET)toundertakeacourseinbiomedicalwriting.Duringthiscourse,youwill

--writeascientificpaper,receivefeedbackonitfromlocalandAmericaneditors,andprepareitforsubmissiontoanEnglish-languagejournal

--learnmoreaboutwritingandpublishingscientificpaperssoyoucansuccessfullysubmitpapersinthefuture

MynameisTuYun-e,andIaminchargeoftheonlinematerialforthecoursethisschoolyear.Lastschoolyear,undertheguidanceandsupervisionofDr.BarbaraGastel,whoistheprincipalconsultanttoourprogramandwastheprincipalinstructorforthebiomedicalwritingcoursefortheyearbefore,IupdatedtheonlinelessonsandIenjoyedthisworkalot.

ThisonlinematerialwasoriginallypreparedbyMrs.ElizabethWhalen,whowasprincipalinstructorinthiscourseforthefirstschoolyear(1996-1997).Dr.Gastelupdatedthematerialsforthesecondschoolyear(1997-1998).Theonlineslessonsforthelastandthisschoolyeararebasedontheirversionsofthematerial.
