videothathehadusedagene-editingtoolCrispr-Cas9tomodify(修改)aparticulargeneintwoembryosbeforetheywereplacedintheirmother’swomb(子宫).He,whoworksinalabinthesouthernChinesecityofShenzhen,saidthetwingirls,knownasLuluandNana,werebornusinganeggthatwasmodified.HefocusedonHIVinfectionpreventionbecausethefatherisHIVpositive.“Nowthefatherhasareasontolive,areasontowork,hehasapurpose,”Hesaid.

Editingthegenesofembryos,whichcanchangeothergenes,isbannedinmanycountriesbecauseDNAchangesarepassedtofuturegenerationsandcouldhaveunforeseeneffectsontheentiregenepool.
