“Therearealargenumberofstudentswhoarenoteconomicsmajors,whowouldliketolearnsomethingaboutit.OneofthethingsIhavedonethisyearistorelatemyteachingtocontemporaryeventsinawaythatonehasn’ttraditionallydone.”Hesaid.

Universityapplicationsrose7%lastyear,buttherewererisesaboveaverageinseveralsubjects.Nursingsawa15%jump,withpeople’srenewedinterestincareersinthepubicsector(部门),whichareseenasmoresecureineconomiccrisis.

Arecentstudyshowedalmosttwothirdsofparentsbelievedschoolsshoulddomoretoteachpupilsaboutfinancialmatters,andalmosthalfsaidtheirchildrenhadaskedthemwhatwasgoingon,althoughaminorityofparentsfelttheydidnotunderstanditthemselveswellenoughtoexplain.
