要
詹姆斯·乔伊斯是二十世纪举世闻名的爱尔兰作家，同时也是一位意识流文学大师。

JamesJoyceisafamousIrishwriterandamasterofthetechniqueofstreamofconsciousnessinthetwentiethcentury.Dublinersisacollectionofshortstoriesconsistingoffifteenshortstories.Bythemethodofrealismandirony,thecollectionpresentsthelifeofpeopleinlowerandmiddleclassinthecityofDublinintheearlytwentiethcentury.Throughoutthefifteenshortstoriesthereisastrongsenseofmentalparalysisaswellasdeath.
DublinerscontainsfifteenportraitsoflifeinthecityofDublin.Joycefocusesonchildrenandadultswhobelongedtothemiddleclass,suchashousemaids,officeclerks,students,shopgirls,andout-of-luckbusinessmen.JoyceenvisionedhiscollectionasalookingglasswithwhichtheIrishcouldobserveandstudythemselves.Inmostofthestories,Joyceusesadetachedbuthighlyperceptivenarrativevoicethatdisplaystheselivestothereadersinprecisedetail.Ratherthanpresentintricatedramaswithcomplexplots,thesestoriessketchdailysituationsinwhichnotmuchseemstohappen—aboyvisitsabazaar,awomanbuyssweetsforholidayfestivities,amanreuniteswithanoldfriendoverafewdrinks.Thoughtheseeventsmaynotappearprofound,thecharacters’intenselypersonalandoftentragicrevelationscertainlyare.ThestoriesinDublinerspeerintothehomes,hearts,andmindsofpeoplewhoselivesconnectandinterminglethroughthesharedspaceandspiritofDublin.Acharacterfromonestorywillmentionthenameofacharacterinanotherstory,andstoriesoftenhavesettingsthatappearinotherstories.SuchsubtleconnectionscreateasenseofsharedexperienceandevokeamapofDublinlifethatJamesJoycewouldreturntoagainandagaininhislaterworks.
Mentalparalysisreferstothementalstateofnumbness,
oppression,helplessnessandemptinessofDublinersundertherestrictedenvironmentinDublin.ThiskindofmentalparalysispenetratedallaspectsofsociallifeinDublin,andithasbecomeacollectivediseasewhichcannotbeescaped.Thecollectionofshortstoriesrevealsthementalparalysisfromthefollowingfouraspects:
childhood,adolescence,adulthoodandsociallife,Thefirstthreestoriesgenerallyrevealthegrowthfromchildhoodtoyouth;thenthefollowingsevenareaboutadultlife;theeleventhtothefourteenthareconcernedwithsociallife;andthelastone,TheDead,actsasasummaryofthewholebook.Allthefifteenstoriesareintegratedtodemonstrateacompleteprocessofmoraldegenerationendingwiththedeathofthesoul.
Inthecollectionofshortstories,charactersmaintaintheirunityandcoherencebymeansofforgetting,excludingormarginalizing.Thustheoriginallyvigorousandwholesomebodyandmindisparalyzedbysocial,familialandindividualconditions.Thesoulofpeopleissoconstrainedthatitdepartsfromthesourceofspirituallifeandcannotcomebacktoit.Intheendtheycometobeawareofitthattheirpastunderstandinganillusionoflifehasbeenlimitedordistorted,withanepiphanyof“paralysis”.
Paralysis—themainthemeofDubliners—iswidelyanalyzedbyliterarycritics.RichardE.PetersonremarksthatinrevealingtheparalysiswithinDublinoftheIrishcitizens,JamesJoycefurthergraspedthecommodityofthemoral,emotional,andspiritualparalysisafflictingDublinlifeandthenecessity,atleastfortheartist,toescapefromtherestrictiveconventionsornetsoffamily,countryandreligion.EachstoryinthecollectionofshortstoriesartfullyandobjectivelyexposestheparalysisoftheindividualcharacterwithinabroadpatternofDublinlife;theverynarrativeofthebookbecomesinfectedorcorruptedbythefailedlifeofeachDubliner.

ACollectionofCriticalEssays,writtenbyReynoldsMaryT,saidthat“Ambition,energy,freewill,andrevolutionaryzeal—theseforcesplaynoroleandcouldnot,Joycethought,inacityandcountrywherecenturiesofpoliticalandreligiousoppressionhadcausedageneralparalysisofmindandwill.Transcendencecameonlythroughdeathoremigration.”
InJoyceinContext,editedbyVincentJ.ChengandTimothyMartin,Joyceanparalysisisexplainedintwoways.Oneiscalledthe“thematicunity”theory,thatis,thethemeofparalysisservesasaunifyingconcernthatembodiesthevalueofthematerialoutofwhichthestorieswereshaped.Theotherexplanationisthatparalysisisduetospiritualenervation.BrewsterGhiselincommentsthat“itisanactionofthehumanspiritstrugglingsurvivalunderpeculiarconditionsofdeprivation,enclosedanddisabledbyadegenerateenvironmentthatprovidesnoneoftheprimarynecessitiesofspirituallife.”
Joyceinhis1904sketch“APortraitoftheArtist”speaksofparalysisnotinindividualtermbutintermsofthe“generalparalysisofaninsanesociety.”Soparalysis,originallyamedicalterm.hereisusedasametaphor,andtheword“moral”,derivedfromtheLatinmoralis,meansthecustomorbehaviorofapeople.ThemoralparalysisinDubliners,toanindividual,istheinabilitytotakedecisiveaction,toestablishanhonestandhonorablelife,andthefailuretoescapefromtheentrapmentandentanglementofthemeanandinsignificantlife.Toanation,themoralparalysismeansitsincapabilitytoprotectitspeoplefromtheoppressionandthefailuretoliberateitspeoplefromfettersderivingfrominternalandexternalforces.
Restrictiveroutinesandtherepetitive,mundanedetailsofeverydaylifemarkthelivesofJoyce’sDublinersandtrapthemincirclesoffrustration,restraint,andviolence.Routineaffectspeoplewhofacedifficultpredicaments,butitalsoaffectspeoplewhohavelittleopenconflictintheirlives.Themomentsofparalysisshowthecharacters’inabilitytochangetheirlivesandreversetheroutinesthathampertheirwishes.SuchimmobilityfixestheDublinersincyclesofexperience.Throughoutthecollection,thisstiflingstateappearsaspartofdailylifeinDublin,whichallDublinersultimatelyacknowledgeandaccept.
