TheyasaSingular--Mostpeople,whenwritingandspeakinginformally,relyonsingulartheyasamatterofcourse:

HeorShe--Despitethechargeofclumsiness,double-pronounconstructionshavemadeacomeback:
"Tobeblackinthiscountryissimplytoopervasiveanexperienceforanywritertoomitfromherorhiswork,"wroteSamuelR.Delany.Overuseofthissolutioncanbeawkward,however.
Pluralizing--Awritercanoftenrecastmaterialintheplural.Forinstance,insteadof"Asheadvancesinhisprogram,themedicalstudenthasincreasingopportunitiesforclinicalwork,"try"Astheyadvanceintheirprogram,medicalstudentshaveincreasingopportunitiesforclinicalwork."
EliminatingPronouns--Avoidhavingtousepronounsatall;insteadof"afirstgradercanfeedanddresshimself,"youcouldwrite,"afirstgradercaneatandgetdressedwithoutassistance."
FurtherAlternatives--he/sheors/he,usingoneinsteadofhe,orusinganewgenericpronoun(thon,co,E,tey,hesh,hir).
